From the beaches of Orkney to the Welsh mountains, and the Derbyshire peaks to the Cornish moors, Britain is home to many strange creatures of folklore. Some are ancient, as enduring as the forests and mountains they inhabit. Others live among us, in our cities, creating new legends as they scuttle through the shadows. And none of them are to be trusted.

Thirteen-year-old Ronnie was looking forward to summer on Harbor Island with her best friends, Mia and Charlie. The trio called themselves "the Clamdiggers," because they were as close as clams. They did everything together: boating, waterskiing, fishing, swimming, and playing their favorite after-dark game—spying on the Island's residents. But now, Ronnie finds that Mia and Charlie are growing up faster than she is, and the Clamdiggers seem to be falling apart.

It was 1947 in Celina, Ohio, when Dr. Ralph Beare and his wife, Lou, childless and in their early forties, adopted a four-and-a-half-month-old orphan. “Janice” knew she was adopted, because her mommy read her a book about how the Beare's chose her out of a Home. "We chose you, but we love you as if you were our own." However, her mother never seemed to forget she was adopted, especially on Mother’s Day, when she couldn’t look at Janice without crying.
