To support herself and her two youngest children, Adelia Anderson teaches at a tiny school on Montana's remote Hi-Line. They live in a two-room teacherage made from an old grain bin. As the Great Depression tightens its grip on the nation, money and food are scarce, but Christmas is coming and so is Eddie, Adelia's firstborn, after being released from state prison.

There are a number of "natives" in this fast-paced novel. At its heart is TJ Garvin, a well-known local renegade whose family settled on the Oregon coast generations ago. He's building a wooden trawler from the ground up in the middle of 80 acres of upland old growth Douglas Fir and has an illegal marijuana grow site hidden in the woods. There's his estranged wife, Johanna, who takes out a restraining order against TJ.
