Lyla Lawal, the African American owner of the local diner, doesn't show up one day. Her long-time employee Sally is concerned. Her boss has never missed a day's work in her life. Sally calls her husband, Miles O'Malley, well-known action novelist and incidental crime-fighter. When Miles first arrived in this small upstate town, Lyla's sandwiches were one of the chief attractions—well, that and the waitress Sally's short skirts.

Sally is mad at him and Hermione, his feisty antique dealer friend, has gone missing. Other than that, life is good for Miles O'Malley as he splits his time between New York City and the small upstate town that has become his second home. Oh, except that a guy is after him because he thinks he's fooling around with his girlfriend. Then he finds a dead body in his cabin. Yeah, life is real good....

Miles O'Malley wants out of Christmas in the city. He rents a primitive cabin in the north woods of New York State, looking for peace quiet away from the incessant bell-ringing and endless ghastly songs. He's not expecting to stumble on a heinous crime, but when he does, his special forces training takes over. He's not expecting to find the love of his life, either, and he's much less efficient at dealing with that. Not a cozy mystery!
