Best friends Zak Lockwood and Mark Alder are training to pilot massive war machines at the United Entities Mechanized Warfare Academy. They've just finished work on restoring their own mech when The Harbingers of The Fall, an organization bent on rendering society to ashes, forces them into conflict overnight. Zak, Mark, and a close-knit group of other cadets must figure out their place in a generational conflict that threatens to tear the world apart.

Sergeant Major John Phillips lives two lives. In one, he teaches cadets at the United Entities Mechanized Warfare Academy how to pilot massive war machines. In the other, he is the Voice of the Fall, stealing government secrets and writing revolutionary doctrines for the Harbingers of the Fall, an organization bent on bringing down civilization so that humanity can rebuild from the ashes.

Cities across the United Entities continue to burn. Fractured military forces struggle to preserve what is left of Stability as the Harbingers of the Fall push society ever closer to collapse. Adrift in this conflict, characters both familiar and new must forge their paths through the chaos. After facing heavy losses, the small group of cadet pilots takes their battered training mechs back to the Academy, unsure of what they may find waiting for them. Zak, separated from his fellow cadets, finds himself helping an enemy soldier. Alison reluctantly relies on him in her desperate search for Eva.
