On a rainy summer day in the Danish suburb of Brabrand, the body of a ten-year-old girl is found in a dumpster. Detective Inspector Roland Benito, having recently moved from Italy to Denmark, is immediately put on the case. When the crime is linked to an online chatroom where the murdered girl had a profile, the hunt for the killer is on. Reporter Anne Larsen and photographer Kamilla Holm are covering the investigation for the Daily News, but the closer they look, the more entangled they become. 

In the swamp outside a small Danish village, two young boys make a gruesome discovery. Just below the surface of the water floats a corpse—now reduced to skin and bones. Twenty-five years ago, someone murdered this unfortunate woman. Now, Detective Inspector Roland Benito and his colleagues must use what scant evidence they have to identify the victim and track down her killer.

Called to the scene of a murder outside Trige, Roland Benito assumes it's a case of petty criminals who made a gruesome mistake. After all, home robberies have been plaguing all of East Jutland for years. But it soon becomes clear that the men who beat Albert Hovgaard to death inside his country estate were no ordinary thieves. Meanwhile, journalist Anne Larsen has been out of work since the financial crisis shuttered the Daily News. But now an unwelcome visit from the past has her investigating a series of missing homeless people.
