Darin stellt Orwell fest, dass die zeitgenössische Literatur bis auf einzelne Lichtblicke wie Henry Miller faktisch ohne Bedeutung ist. In einer aufgeheizten gesellschaftlichen Atmosphäre, innerhalb derer national orientierte Politiker „ihren" jeweiligen Völkern eine jeweils großartige Zukunft versprechen und die autoritären Strukturen immer mehr Anhänger begeistern, sind die Voraussetzungen für das mögliche Ende der westlichen zivilisierten Welt natürlich optimal.

Darin schildert Orwell seine Erfahrungen aus dem spanischen Krieg und spannt den Bogen zur sogenannten „objektiven Wahrheit", welche in ziemlich vielen Varianten zu existieren scheint. Des Weiteren stellt er anhand zahlreicher Beispiele aus der Praxis fest, dass die spanischen Freiheitskämpfer keinerlei Waffenlieferungen aus den demokratischen Staaten als Unterstützung bekommen haben, während die faschistischen Franco-Truppen mit Kriegsgerät aus Nazi-Deutschland und Nazi-Italien unterstützt wurden und deshalb den Sieg davontrugen.

In Salvador Dalí wirft Orwell einen Blick auf Dalís Biografie, welche man auch als „Geständnisse eines perversen Wahnsinnigen" beschreiben könnte, weil darin von allen menschenmöglichen Verbrechen, Schandtaten und moralisch höchst verwerflichen Dingen die Rede ist, die Dalí für seine Person der Vergangenheit beansprucht. Es bleibt offen, ob diese makabere Beichte den Tatsachen entspricht oder ob hier ein Selbstvermarktungs- und Marketinggenie zu Werke ging – jedenfalls hat es sich überaus gut verkauft.

Womöglich durch die brutale Fremdherrschaft des Empires über Indien und durch Stalins organisierten Staatsterror und Massenmord angewidert, entwickelte er sich zu einem überzeugten sozialistischen Demokraten, der alle Machtorgane von möglichst vielen Menschen organisiert und Machtumsetzung immer auf möglichst vielen Schultern verteilt sehen wollte.
