In Transformation: Emergence of the Self, noted analyst and author Murray Stein explains what this process is, and what it means for an individual to experience it. Transformation usually occurs at midlife, but is much more complicated than what we colloquially call a midlife crisis. Consciously working through this life stage can lead people to become who they are and have always potentially been. Indeed, Stein suggests, transformation is the essential human task.

"Totem and Taboo: Resemblances Between the Mental Lives of Savages and Neurotics" is a work by Sigmund Freud, published in German in 1913. It is a collection of four essays first published in the journal "Imago" (1912-13), employing the application of psychoanalysis to the fields of archaeology, anthropology, and the study of religion.

Au-delà du principe de plaisir est un ouvrage majeur de Sigmund Freud, publié en 1920. Le principe de plaisir fait référence à la tendance instinctive chez les individus à rechercher le plaisir et à éviter la douleur, tendance qui motive une grande partie du comportement humain. En outre, ne se limitant pas à cette seule question, Freud développe également dans cet ouvrage sa théorie sur les pulsions de vie et de mort, cherchant à expliquer des aspects du psychisme humain qui ne sont pas entièrement compris par la seule référence au principe de plaisir.

Sigmund Freud considérait cet ouvrage comme son œuvre fondamentale. Il eut d'ailleurs un succès retentissant. Il est vrai que la proposition de l'auteur est attirante : le rêve, perçu comme l'accomplissement déguisé d'un désir, serait la voie royale qui mène à l'inconscient. À partir du récit de n'importe quel rêve, Freud s'autorise ainsi des interprétations dont le mécanisme utilise de libres associations afin d'accéder aux idées latentes et aux désirs refoulés du narrateur.
