Überblicksdarstellungen zur Geschichte der Philosophie gibt es dutzendfach. Eine Darstellung, die heute vergessen ist, vor hundert Jahren bei ihrem Erscheinen aber viel gelesen wurde und sich großer Beliebtheit erfreute, ist die fünfbändige "Geschichte der Philosophie" von August Messer. August Messer war Professor für Philosophie und Pädagogik in Gießen. Er gehörte zudem der sogenannten Würzburger Schule an, eine Gruppe von Psychologen und Philosophen, die zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts Forschungen im Bereich der Kognitionspsychologie betrieben, damals noch Denkpsychologie genannt.

Aristotle's Poetics (335 BCE) is the earliest surviving work of dramatic theory and first surviving philosophical treatise on dramatic or literary theory.
