After receiving a call from his sister Bertha about some strange activity around her property, Joe investigates and soon comes to believe it may be the product of a Rougarou. As more weird phenomena take place, Joe and Alvin seek the help and wisdom of a friend who helps shed light on the folklore of the Rougarou. From cattle mutilations, eerie night howls, strange footprints, to dead bodies showing up with large teeth and claw marks, the theory of a Rougarou's involvement becomes more and more evident.

Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, was an Irish writer known also by the Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo. His book Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things, comprises two parts, the first being the "Kwaidan Proper" and the second, "Insect-Studies", which consists of an essay each on ants, butterflies and mosquitos. According to the author, most of the folk tales and ghost stories in the first part were translated from old Japanese texts. The themes encompass resurrection, sacrifice, magic, and the realm of dreams.
