Tom Jones is greatly admired not only for the meticulous craft with which it was written, but also for its humor, objectivity and penetrating psychological depth. It is without a doubt one of the great contributions to the English novel, and as such will always maintain a place of honor in world literature. The focus in Melincourt is the operation of the "rotten borough" which corrupted the English electoral system until the reform bill of 1832. A rotten borough was a constituency that had been established by royal prerogative but had subsequently lost most of its population. Nevertheless, it still retained the right to have two representatives in the House of Commons. On the other hand, many population centers which had expanded rapidly during the Industrial Revolution were not entitled to any electoral representation.

Hard Times fu pubblicato nel 1854, e tratta della società inglese e della rivoluzione industriale. La città di Coketown, in cui è ambientato il romanzo, è il simbolo della disumanizzazione da parte della società industriale che riduce i lavoratori da esseri a forza lavoro (il testo inglese definisce gli operai Hands, che è stato tradotto letteralmente come Mani, per rispettare la scelta stilistica). Nella famiglia protagonista della storia viene impartita una educazione in cui la fantasia viene messa al bando e colpevolizzata.

Pubblicato originariamente in venti puntate mensili, tra il 1836 e il 1837, il romanzo incontrò già all'epoca un grande successo popolare, soprattutto a partire dalla comparsa di Sam Weller (nel quinto capitolo), che portò le vendite a oltre quarantamila copie per numero. Oreste Del Buono sottolineava che la pubblicazione dei fascicoli rappresentava una sorta di evento: li leggevano nei cortili ad alta voce a tutta la famiglia.

Oliver Twist fu il secondo romanzo di Dickens, pubblicato a puntate mensili dal 1837 al 1839. E' una delle opere più famose dello scrittore, primo romanzo inglese ad avere un ragazzo come protagonista e uno dei primi romanzi sociali. L'umorismo feroce con cui Dickens descrive la società inglese, la povertà, l'abuso infantile, l'ipocrisia della cultura fu decisamente una novità.

Candido è in grande difficoltà. Afflitto da una serie infinita di tragiche sfortune, riesce comunque a tenere la testa alta, rimanendo caparbiamente aggrappato alla promessa del filosofo Leibniz per la quale il mondo in cui viviamo è il migliore dei mondi possibili.
