Dieser satirische Roman von Christoph Martin Wieland (1733-1813) ist etwas für literarische Feinschmecker, die Freude an skurrilem Humor und an nicht leicht eingängiger Sprache haben. Der Roman ist in der Zeitschrift "Der Teutsche Merkur" in den Jahren 1774–1780 in Fortsetzungen erschienen. Laut Volker Meid, dem Herausgeber der Studienausgabe, nach der gelesen wird, handelt es sich um den "ersten deutschen Fortsetzungsroman". Abderit ist eine Bezeichnung für eine Art Schildbürger. Die Abderiten sind aber nicht schlicht naive, einfältige Menschen.

An Georg Christoph Lichtenberg kam vor mehr als 200 Jahren nichts unkommentiert vorbei - weder eine mathematische Formel noch eine Alltagsbeobachtung. The focus in Melincourt is the operation of the "rotten borough" which corrupted the English electoral system until the reform bill of 1832. A rotten borough was a constituency that had been established by royal prerogative but had subsequently lost most of its population. Nevertheless, it still retained the right to have two representatives in the House of Commons. On the other hand, many population centers which had expanded rapidly during the Industrial Revolution were not entitled to any electoral representation.

The Freaks of Mayfair by E.F. Benson is a series of satirical sketches introducing us to some bizarre inhabitants of Edwardian High Society of Mayfair, which was, and still is today, the stamping ground of the very wealthy. Each sketch introduces a different type of "freak". L'opera (qui nella traduzione di Silvio Spaventa Filippi) fu scritta a puntate, come le precedenti, nel 1843-44, ma la tiratura delle copie fu circa la metà dei precedenti successi di Dickens, per cui ci fu una rottura con gli editori che costrinsero Dickens a rimborsare il denaro da loro spesi. Dickens cambiò allora il titolo dell'opera in "America", approffittando del suo viaggio in America per inserire una satira di quel continente e dei suoi abitanti, satira tanto più feroce in quanto sentiva che il nuovo mondo aveva distrutto delle illusioni di quanti speravano di vedervi realizzati i propri ideali.

Casa Desolata è il nono romanzo di Dickens. Non è uno dei romanzi più noti di Dickens, certamente è uno dei più complessi, con una grandissima quantità di personaggi, che vengono presentati dettagliatamente nella prima parte del romanzo, per poi ritrovarne le vite intrecciate in trame insospettabili. Inoltre, più che in altri romanzi, lo scrittore coglie l’occasione per denunciare l’indifferenza verso la povertà e l’ingiustizia presenti nella società dell’epoca.

Moriae encomium, zu Deutsch: Lob der Torheit (oder Lob der Narrheit), ist der Titel eines der bekanntesten Werke des niederländischen Humanisten Erasmus von Rotterdam. Candide è in grande difficoltà. "Candide", la celebre e pungente satira di Voltaire del 1959, ha un ritmo frenetico, è caustico e fa sbellicare dalle risate, ma al contempo contiene un'esplorazione magistrale della filosofia, della religione, del pregiudizio e della crudeltà del cieco ottimismo.
