「やまなし」は、5月と12月という2つの場面で構成されるカニの家族の幻想的なお話。「オツベルと象」は大金持ちの大地主が、迷い込んできた白象を騙して、奴隷のようにこき使うが、白象はの仲間の象の群れを呼んで屋敷を踏みつぶし森に帰っていく話。「雪わたり」は四郎とかん子という兄妹と紺三郎という子狐の話。狐への偏見を払拭するために、子狐が人間の子供たちを啓蒙しようとする姿が面白い。
