朗読されているお話はどれも、一度は聴いたことがある有名なお話ばかりです。
日本のお話からは「ももたろう」や「かぐや姫」、世界のお話からは「大きなカブ」や「三匹のこぶた」。イソップ・グリム・アンデルセンの三大童話からも幅広く収録。その他に、落語の元になったお話や、ちょっと珍しいアフリカや東南アジアの不思議なむかしばなしもご用意しています。

メソアメリカとは、メキシコ及び中央アメリカ北西部地域において、共通的な特徴をもった農耕民文化ないし様々な高度文明（マヤ、オルメカ、テオティワカン、アステカなど）が繁栄した領域を指します。 その中でも今回はマヤ神話とアステカ神話をクローズアップしました。 「ポポル・ヴフ」とは中央アメリカのグアテマラの付近に11世紀ごろに住んでいたマヤの1部族・キチェー族によって書かれた神話であり、古代マヤ文明が1000年近く受け継いだ物語をまとめて記されたものと考えられています。 また、「ポポル・ヴフ」は作家の三島由紀夫氏が魅せられ、古代マヤの口承文学と紹介したことでも知られています。

一方アステカ帝国はメキシコ中央高原地域に15世紀前半から1521年まで存在した国であり、アステカ人は今の世界が始まる前に、別の世界があることを信じていました……それを記したものがアステカ神話です。 どちらの文明にも神様に生贄を捧げる風習があったこともあり、内容も一部過激なものであったり、斬新な倫理観を含んだものも多々ありますが、本作はすべて子供向けのわかりやすい内容に書き直され、お父さんお母さんも、子どもと一緒に楽しめる内容になっています。

He played in college at the University of Utah during WWII, a time when many Japanese Americans were stripped of their freedoms and incarcerated by the US government.
