A mixed-race orphan, Murray grew up in segregated North Carolina before escaping to New York, where she attended Hunter College and became a labor activist in the 1930s. When she applied to graduate school at the University of North Carolina, where her white great-great-grandfather had been a trustee, she was rejected because of her race. She went on to graduate first in her class at Howard Law School, only to be rejected for graduate study again at Harvard University this time on account of her sex. Special Agent Edwin Woodriffe was one of the first African-Americans to integrate the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the 1960s. On January 8, 1969, while attempting to apprehend an escaped fugitive, he and partner Anthony Palmisano were mortally wounded, making Woodriffe the first African-American FBI agent to be killed in the line of duty.

Sal Maggio dropped out of college, and joined the NJ Army National Guard. Then he entered the New Jersey State Police Academy, graduated, and started his police career in central New Jersey as a general road trooper. After numerous transfers (none for disciplinary reasons), Maggio spent 19 years on the "road" as a trooper and road sergeant. He recalls many incidents encountered, while working the highways and policing the towns and townships that do not have a local police department.

But this is not a book just for lawyers, although any lawyer worth her or his salt will find it hard to put it down. Anyone interested in what it's really like to receive an unexpected phone call late at night after a long day in court and have to face a sudden legal emergency which requires you to drive across the state to provide urgently needed legal services to desperate clients who have nowhere else to turn should listen to this book.
