California has more natural hazards per square mile than any other state, but this hasn’t deterred people from moving here. Entire California towns and regions frequently contend with destruction caused by earthquakes, floods, landslides and debris flows, and sea-level rise and coastal erosion.

When the residents of the city of San Francisco settled down for the night on Tuesday, April 17, 1906, they had many reasons to feel optimistic. In the space of less than 50 years, San Francisco had transformed itself from a remote outpost to become the commercial metropolis of the Pacific Coast, a thriving trade center of America’s West Coast.

This 2nd Edition is the result of my research for a great number of years. The 1st Edition was in hardback and was published in 2003. This book is my attempt to preserve a consecutive account of the investigation that I have done into the McFarland family history for many years.
