Seine hohen Ideale beschreibt er als "absoluten Geist" und fordert statt des Behauptens das "begreifende Erkennen", welches durch Nachdenken zu erreichen sei. Lebenslang pflegt er sein großes politisches Interesse an der deutschen Staatsbildung. Die vielbeachteten Abhandlungen Die Verfassung Deutschlands (1802) und Über die wissenschaftlichen Behandlungsarten des Naturrechts (1803) sind beeindruckende Zeugnisse dafür.
