Charles Dickens was a master of the macabre. His stories of madness, murder and revenge, often imbued with a sympathetic moral undertone, have continued to thrill and chill fans ever since they were written. Here then are 15 tales that display the full range of Dickens' Gothic talents. "The Signalman," perhaps the most well-known, is a chilling story about a mysterious figure and its deathly omen. The first thing every listener will want to know is whether Anne Shirley appears in these stories of Avonlea and Spencervale. She certainly does. As a matter of fact, page one starts off in this manner: "Anne Shirley was curled up on the window seat of Theodora Dix's sitting room one Saturday evening, looking dreamily afar at some fair starland beyond the hills of sunset. "The Bet" is one of Chekov's most anthologized stories. A rich banker makes a bet with a poor artist that he cannot voluntarily stay imprisoned for a long period of time. The result of the bet is quite different than either man could have supposed.

My Man Jeeves is the first book in a series of comical ones by written by P.G. Wodehouse, which recount the tales of Wooster and his ever reliable valet Jeeves. The stories follow our hapless hero and his misadventures in New York where he and his friends always seem to be getting into trouble, only to be bailed out by the ingenious plots of his witty valet, Jeeves.

The 1925 New York edition of Ernest Hemingway’s In Our Time trails readers through the years before, during, and after World War I.
