Social Justice

Who are you? How do the identities you hold—like your racial or gender identity—impact you every day? How do they impact others? These big and important questions are key to understanding ourselves. Part of being your true self means learning about group identities and how they affect our experience of the world. With kid-friendly explanations of key ideas and relevant scenarios, this text will help young kids explore their identities and how it shapes their experience.

Why is social justice important, and why does social justice matter?Social justice and diversity have reached the collective consciousness in recent years, with celebrities and politicians alike wading into issues of everyday bias and discrimination. Only now have phrases like equity over equality, discrimination and disparities become mainstream in our vocabulary and consciousness. People finally talk about diversity oppression and change, and human rights for everyone.

The 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin, an African American teenager in Florida, and the subsequent acquittal of his killer, brought public attention to controversial "Stand Your Ground" laws.
