Fra i molti articoli che Dickens pubblicò, fra il 1850 e il 1867, "La polizia segreta" è senz'altro il più curioso. Accantonando per un momento Londra, coi suoi sobborghi malfamati e i suoi detective ligi alla giustizia, Dickens ci trasporta nella Napoli di metà Ottocento, al crepuscolo del regime borbonico. Qui, con esplicita riprovazione dello stesso autore, vige un controllo spietato sulla popolazione da parte della temibile polizia segreta.

Nel 1850 Charles Dickens firma ben tre articoli riguardanti la vita e il lavoro del detective (figura nuovissima, a quei tempi, risalendo la creazione del Detective Branch di Londra a solamente otto anni prima).
