In April 2011, four soldiers set out on a challenge that even an able-bodied athlete would balk at: a 200-mile trek, unsupported, to the North Pole. It was the culmination of a journey that began long before, when two friends decided to mount an expedition that would demonstrate how remarkable our armed forces are and raise funds for the rehabilitation of injured service men and women. Little did they know that their idea would ultimately gain global attention.

The story begins in the warm climes of New Zealand in the South Pacific when an online friendship between an American and a New Zealander blossoms into romance, and it concludes among the Eskimo in the wintry wilds of remote Alaska. For adventurous romantics and armchair travelers alike.

Zintkala Waste, a full-blood Lakota, was born in 1943 in a remote community on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. Near his first birthday, he developed pneumonia. His mother, knowing he was near death, prayed to God, “Wakan Tanka, if you give me back my son, I will give him to you”. Therefore, Zintkala spent his growing-up years with elders, wisdom-keepers, and healers, who taught him traditional ways, including how to access and trust spirit guides. When he left the reservation and faced devastating hardship, loss, and discrimination, his Lakota values sustained him.

The Gospels, and especially the Gospel of Mark, provide illustrations for Christian believers who face the everyday issues of life: conflict, doubt, hostility, urgent needs, and betrayal among many others. The devotional meditations in this book are drawn from the author’s life experience as a husband, father, student, professor, and church leader.

In this volume, Mark described Jesus' ministry around the Sea of Galilee, starting at Capernaum, traveling across the sea to Gergesa, and back to Capernaum. Jesus and his disciples were caught in a violent storm as they sailed across the sea. Once they reached the shore, they met a man who had been driven from society and lived among the tombs. The evil spirits cast out of the poor tomb-dwelling man spooked a huge herd of pigs that ran into the sea and drowned. The pig owners and other neighbors were angry, and they urged Jesus to leave their area.

This volume begins with an exploration of the various positions people took when Jesus restored a man who had been living naked and tormented in the tombs on a Gadarean hillside. The cleansed and restored man wanted to join Jesus’ company of followers, but Jesus told him to go home and share the good news of what God had done for him with his own family.
