ある南の国の人たちは、山の中には、とても恐ろしいりゅうが住んでいると信じていました。でも、それは噂話で、りゅうをはっきり見た人はいませんでしたし、探して確かめてみようとする人もいません。大人も子どもも、ただ恐れ、誰かが退治してくれればよいと思っていたのです。しかし、この物語の主人公の男の子は、違っていました。りゅうの話を聞いても怖がるどころか、皆から恐れられていて、りゅうは可哀想だというのです。たちまち奇妙な子どもだと言われるようになりました。男の子は７つのお誕生日を迎える数日前に、ついにりゅうを探しに出かけました。そして、歩き続けて山に到着し、深い谷間に目をやりながら、精一杯大きな声で呼びたてたのです。「山のりゅう、山のりゅう」。その声を聞いたりゅうは不思議に思いましたが、とにかく出てみようと、男の子の目の前に姿を現しました…。悪いこともしないのに、恐ろしいものだと決め付けられていたりゅう、先入観を持たずにりゅうに会いに来た男の子、現実の世界にも、似通ったことが少なくありません。光景が目に浮かぶような、ともさかりえさんの朗読でお聞きください。
