オスカー・ワイルドは1854年、アイルランドのダブリンで、高名な眼科・耳鼻科医の次男として生まれる。71年、ダブリンのトリニティ・コレッジに奨学金を得て入学、古典学の最高賞を受賞。74年、オックスフォード大学モードリン・コレッジに奨学金を得て入学、在学中の78年に校内の詩の最高賞を受賞し、大学で出版される。卒業後、奇抜な服装と機知に富んだ会話で、ロンドン社交界の名士となる。84年、アイルランドの弁護士の娘、コンスタンス・メアリー・ロイドと結婚、長男シリル、次男ヴィヴィアンをもうける。90年、「リッピンコット」誌に小説『ドリアン・グレイの肖像』を発表。91年、第8代クインズベリー侯爵の三男、アルフレッド・ダグラス卿（愛称ボジー）と知り合い、交際を始める。93年、戯曲『サロメ』をフランス語で出版、ボジーによる英訳も同年出版される。94年、クインズベリー侯爵を名誉毀損罪で訴えるが、95年、逆に侯爵に同性愛行為の罪で訴えられ、重労働2年の有罪判決が下り、破産する。96年、出獄後すぐにフランスに渡る。97年、『レディング監獄の唄』出版。98年から頭痛に苦しみ始め、1900年11月30日、パリのホテルの一室で大脳髄膜炎により死去。同地の墓地に埋葬される。「幸福な王子」は、1888年、The Happy Prince and Other Talesという題名で、児童向け童話集として出版されたものの中の一編。
