息子が肺病を患った夫妻は、
なんとかそれを直したい一心で黒ずくめの気味の悪い男から大枚をはたいて赤い饅頭を買いとる。
それは処刑された死刑囚の血に浸した饅頭で、血饅頭を食べれば病気が治ると信じられていたのだ。
老夫妻はそれを調理して息子に食べさせるが、その甲斐もなく息子は死んでしまう。
処刑された死刑囚というのは、夏瑜という革命家で、息子が亡くなった後、
母親はその革命家の母と墓場で会うことになるのだった。
尚、この夏瑜という革命家は秋瑾という実在の女性革命家がモデルともいわれています。
魯 迅（ろじん1881年9月25日 – 1936年10月19日）
中国の小説家、翻訳家、思想家。本名は周 樹人（しゅう じゅじん）
浙江省紹興府の士大夫の家系に生まれ、中国で最も早く西洋の技法を用いて小説を書いた作家であり、
その作品は、中国だけでなく、東アジアでも広く愛読されている。
日本でも中学校用のすべての国語教科書に彼の作品が収録されている。
代表作に「阿Q正伝」「狂人日記」「故郷」「藤野先生」などがある。
