Publisher's Summary

During the year 1866, ships of several nations spot a mysterious sea monster, which some suggest to be a giant narwhal. The United States government assembles an expedition in New York City to find and destroy the monster. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist and narrator of the story, who happens to be in New York at the time, receives a last-minute invitation to join the expedition which he accepts. Canadian whaler and master harpoonist Ned Land and Aronnax's faithful servant Conseil are also brought aboard.

Not that good

For something that is treated a classic, its very much overrated. The story is really not that intriguing although it might have stimulated the imagination of people back when it was written.

Great Narration On An Iconic, Yet, Mediocre Book

The narration is very well done. The different voices used for the characters are consistent and the words remain clear and understandable. The book itself, while iconic and provides an interesting story, often goes into monotonous and overly lengthy descriptions.

amazing!!!

What a wonderful story. So far ahead of its time. It's hard to believe it was written in the late 1800's.

Fantastic

I am very pleased to have listened to this audiobook. The book itself far exceeded my expectations and the narrator was phenomenal.

Delightfully engaging

I know I must have read this book as a child, but I do not remember it, so the plot was new to me. I don’t normally go for science fiction, but am working my way through the classics, so I was ready to listen. I was surprised at how utterly engaging and enthralling it was! What a truly great book. There is so much world history woven in, and natural science (along with the fiction). I can see how a child would be drawn in, but it did not disappoint this adult. Fantastic narration by David Linski. A highly recommended escape.

Fantastic story

Great narration and a fantastic adventure story! It is amazing that this was written pre-1900!

Enjoyable to listen to

I enjoyed listening to this book while reading my physical copy. The story is classic, and it’s interesting reading it with a modern lens. The narrator reads slowly and clearly, so I actually preferred to listen at 1.45 speed. My biggest hang up/frustration/ick though that threw me off was the narrator’s voice choice for Ned Land. Ned is meant to be Quebecois (French Canadian), and while I understand that may not be an accent someone would want to attempt, even just a generic Canadian accent would have been more acceptable than a grating, brash, old-timey, East coast American accent. So if you’re a stickler for vocal performances and accents, this might not be the listen for you.
