Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author Jenny Colgan returns to the beloved Scottish Highland town of Kirrinfief, which listeners first met in The Bookshop on the Shore, and adds a dash of London’s bustling urban landscape.

Lissie is a nurse in a gritty, hectic London neighborhood. Always terribly competent and good at keeping it all together, she’s been suffering quietly with PTSD after helping to save the victim of a shocking crime. Her supervisor quietly arranges for Lissie to spend a few months doing a much less demanding job in the little town of Kirrinfeif in Scottish Highlands, hoping that the change of scenery will help her heal. Lissie will be swapping places with Cormack, an Army veteran who’s Kirrinfeif’s easygoing nurse/paramedic/all-purpose medical man. Lissie’s never experienced small-town life, and Cormack’s never spent more than a day in a big city, but it seems like a swap that would do them both some good.

In London, the gentle Cormack is a fish out of the water; in Kirrinfief, the dynamic Lissie finds it hard to adjust to the quiet. But these two strangers are now in constant contact, taking over each other’s patients, endlessly emailing about anything and everything. Lissie and Cormack discover a new depth of feeling...for their profession and for each other.

But what will happen when Lissie and Cormack finally meet?

Fun Listen

I think the book started a little slowly, but once it got going the characters were very fun. Sometimes you just want to read a book about nice people. Not perfect, maybe a little broken, but you can count on them to do the right thing.

Narration was perfect and I always want to visit Scotland when I read a Jenny Colgan book.

Also, a nice listen when taking my morning walks

Another great Novel. Excellent reader!

I have been binging on Jenny Colgan since quarantine. This is another really good offering, but more than anything I was ABSOLUTELY thrilled to get a glimpse of Nanny 7, Harry, and their new family, and mostly to hear Patrick again. This reader is excellent—performance wonderful—and the character and voice of Patrick is one of my all time favorites EVER!

Painful to listen to

The narration was awful, though it was on par with the book. There was absolutely nothing about it that was remotely entertaining or enjoyable. I got it on sale and it still was too much. Not sure what I was missing and why there were so many positive reviews, buy be wary before you listen. The editors blurb sounds lovely. Not my experience of the story.

Utterly engaging

Jenny Colgan’s prose, crafting and storytelling are far (far!) better than most ‘chick lit’ of the past 30 or so years in 500 Miles from You. Reader Eilidh Beaton’s work is flawless- she even nails a scene in which a Scot tries to sound like a Cockney and ends up sounding slightly Welsh.

This is an excellent production of a wonderful, escapist story. Highly recommend.

Moving, Funny

TA: death of a child, gang murder

The horrible thing is in the first chapter and it is not gruesomely described but the grief and trauma of the MC witness is important to the plot. It is handled realistically but not overdone.
There is a lot if comedy and sweetness among friends. Contrast between the London metropolis and the rural town and surrounds. New friendships and blooming romance via correspondence. The main story is Lyssa’s healing journey and the connections she forms that help her along.
Revisit old friends if you read previous books but this is a stand alone.

The entire book leads up to the last chapter.

I usually find sequels to be less effective books than the first of a series. That is not true here. Of the three in this series book 2 was by far my favorite and until the last chapter I would have said book 3 was the least successful. However, the entire book 3 leads up to the last chapter, which, surprising to me, made me cry. I do love how Ms Colgan tackles current topics in a way to make you think. These are well written novels about everyday people who make a difference in other people's lives.

Wonderful follow up with familiar characters

I thought this was a stand-alone Jenny Colgan, and was delighted to find Zoe and Nina and friends in a familiar setting, while learning about these new characters, who were delightful. Though it didn’t center bibliophiles, this may be my favorite Jenny Colgan of all. I had gotten quite discouraged after not enjoying her Mure series, but this has renewed my Jenny Colgan fan status entirely!

A wonderful story!

This. Book. Was. Awesome! Loved, LOVED, this story!!! The narrator was great too.

Jenny Colgan has written another funny, heartwarming, romantic, and totally satisfying story. After, what I thought was a slightly disappointing Book 2 in the series, Book 3 was absolutely wonderful! It has her signature snarky dialogue, characters you can really care about (both the MCs as well as their friends and relations). As an added bonus for Colgan fans, there are appearances from characters in Books 1 and 2 as well as a reference to "Huckle honey". Yay!

Some profanity.
