À propos de cet audio

Stranded by a raging hurricane, a group of strangers find themselves trapped at a grand antebellum mansion, now a boutique hotel. Novelist Callum Burke, known for his historical bestsellers, is among the guests, the Oleander Plantation the main stop on a research trip for his new book, while several couples from up north are in New Orleans to celebrate personal milestones.

As the hurricane batters the house and the waters rise, Callum is found hanging from an ancient oak, murdered in the same way as the notorious villain in his most popular book. Cut off from the outside world, the guests soon realize that the murderer might strike again, and everyone at the plantation could either be the next victim or the killer.

The Oleander Plantation becomes the perfect setting for a real-life locked-room mystery, where the truth is buried beneath layers of deceit, hidden motives, and suppressed desires. The tempest outside mirrors the chaos within the mansion's walls, and plot devices from Callum’s book become clues as truth and fiction collide in a deadly narrative.

There was so many twists in this book even when I thought I had figured it out there was another corner to turn. Well done well written well narrated

So many twists

The story was disappointing, the narrator is another one of those news anchor, over pronunciation, borderline AI- sounding women. She sounded tolerable in the preview, but I soon regretted the purchase.

Another distracting narrator

Irina Shapiro tells the tale of a narcissistic dirtbag Historical Fiction author murdered while staying at a Louisiana plantation converted into a B&B.
Shapiro reveals through multiple POV chapters that most of the guests (and a couple of staff) are awful people with sketchy pasts and motives to kill. Implying that these people all gathered through independent scheming and/or coincidence, however, is a bridge too far (the plot structure reminded me of Agatha Christie's classic 'Murder On The Orient Express' but more implausible).
The writing is capable - albeit including some awkwardly shoehorned-in explicit sex - but the insupportable characters made it nearly impossible to set aside reservations and accept logical plot holes. I had difficulty with this one.

As to presentation: Jess Nahikian tends to overenunciate and some male character portrayals are subpar.. but I found her emotive tone and enthusiasm enjoyable. Merlin Press sound engineers further provide high-quality technical support. This recording is an "above-average" listening product overall.

Altogether, I rate 'After Midnight' 5/10-stars. It was a reasonable time investment for free, but spend your Credit elsewhere if it leaves the 'Plus' menu.

[Incidentally: it feels kinda racist to say, but audiobook producers should hire black readers to perform every day black characters. It's not like "Afro-Carribean" or gang/ebonics accent work where narrators can fake it.. white people simply do not do African-American characters justice when they're merely engaged in discussion]
