About this listen

Alexander was born into the royal family of Macedonia, the kingdom that would soon rule over Greece. Tutored as a boy by Aristotle, Alexander had an inquisitive mind that would serve him well when he faced formidable obstacles during his military campaigns. Shortly after taking command of the army, he launched an invasion of the Persian Empire, and continued his conquests as far south as the deserts of Egypt and as far east as the mountains of present-day Pakistan and the plains of India.

In his lively and authoritative biography of Alexander, Philip Freeman describes Alexander's astonishing achievements and provides insight into the mercurial character of the great conqueror. Alexander could be petty and magnanimous, cruel and merciful, impulsive and farsighted. Above all, he was ferociously, intensely competitive and could not tolerate losing - which he rarely did.

As Freeman explains, without Alexander, the influence of Greece on the ancient world would surely not have been as great as it was, even if his motivation was not to spread Greek culture for beneficial purposes, but instead to unify his empire.

I don't always listen to a book "cover to cover" but this one kept me interested all the way through. I enjoyed it and the only disappointment was when it was over. I want more

Incredible telling of Alexander the greats life. Expert tactician, with a look at how brutal he could be to his enemies or how kind and forgiving he could be. The respect he had for his foes is one of my favourite traits of the historical figure, such how he wept and avenged the death of King Darius III. It’s difficult to explain without using any spoilers how Alexander the Great, with standing at 5’7, just how perfect of an example he was that it’s better to be smart than strong. His knowledge of battle and war gave him a massive advantage in his conquest and helped crush his enemies.

This book is very well written and narrated. It manages to explain the complexities of a character like Alexander while remaining simple enough to be understood. Freeman is careful to avoid being caught up in simplistic presentations of Alexander's character which is a refreshing approach.

From cover to cover the book remains interesting. It shows a good depth of information without becoming caught up in minutiae. Freeman accomplishes this by using a narrative approach to history. Highly recommend!

I enjoyed this. narrator was excellent, and they story was good. hard to follow at times, but I'm sure if I was more knowledgeable of that era it would've been easier to follow.

I was skeptical about listening to a history book, but I had seen reviews saying that it was made as a story and designed to be interesting. It lived up to it.

Great listen, not dry
