About this listen

In this vital and incisive work, best-selling and award-winning author Tanya Talaga explores the alarming rise of youth suicide in Indigenous communities in Canada and beyond. From Northern Ontario to Nunavut, Norway, Brazil, Australia, and the United States, the Indigenous experience in colonized nations is startlingly similar and deeply disturbing. It is an experience marked by the violent separation of Peoples from the land, the separation of families, and the separation of individuals from traditional ways of life - all of which has culminated in a spiritual separation that has had an enduring impact on generations of Indigenous children. As a result of this colonial legacy, too many communities today lack access to the basic determinants of health - income, employment, education, a safe environment, health services - leading to a mental health and youth suicide crisis on a global scale. But, Talaga reminds us, First Peoples also share a history of resistance, resilience, and civil rights activism, from the Occupation of Alcatraz led by the Indians of All Tribes, to the Northern Ontario Stirland Lake Quiet Riot, to the Standing Rock protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, which united Indigenous Nations from across Turtle Island in solidarity.

Based on her Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy series, All Our Relations is a powerful call for action, justice, and a better, more equitable world for all Indigenous Peoples.

The facts behind this book need to be a part of the history taught in Canadian schools. Not something the average Canadian would be proud of.

The author weaves harsh truths and resiliency beautifully in this book. A great read for anyone beginning their journey in understanding Canada's true history or for someone who wants to add to their knowledge. The way that the first story continues to be weaved throughout the story shows just how much everything is interconnected. Miigwetch for these teachings.

Every Canadian should read or listen to this book. it does a great job of presenting the facts and insights into why so many first nations people have lost their way.

We stole their children away. We tried to kill the indian inside, stole their language, took away their clothing, their parents, everything. Starved them, beat them, and in some cases even raped and murdered them.

Can a person know how to be a parent when they had no parents to show them how it is done? how can they have a whole and loving family of their own when they never had one when they were little?

Took away their rights to exist on the land, their knowledge of how to survive and thrive. Made them dependent upon white mans foods then used that to control and starve them.

Nobody has a right to call themselves a Canadian until they have educated themselves on this shameful history we all share.

I am angry. Beyond angry, really. This is why they hate white people. This is why they hurt us, hurt one another, hurt themselves. We owe it to them all to find out how we can begin to repair this awful damage.

Important to All Canadians
