Publisher's Summary

If you loved A Man Called Ove, then prepare to be delighted as Jamaican immigrant Hubert rediscovers the world he'd turned his back on this "warm, funny" novel (Good Housekeeping).

In weekly phone calls to his daughter in Australia, widower Hubert Birdpaints a picture of the perfect retirement, packed with fun, friendship, and fulfillment. But it's a lie. In reality, Hubert's days are all the same, dragging on without him seeing a single soul.

Until he receives some good news - good news that in one way turns out to be the worst news ever, news that will force him out again, into a world he has long since turned his back on. The news that his daughter is coming for a visit.

Now Hubert faces a seemingly impossible task: to make his real life resemble his fake life before the truth comes out. Along the way Hubert stumbles across a second chance at love, renews a cherished friendship, and finds himself roped into an audacious community scheme that seeks to end loneliness once and for all....

Life is certainly beginning to happen to Hubert Bird. But with the origin of his earlier isolation always lurking in the shadows, will he ever get to live the life he's pretended to have for so long?

Stunning

A beautiful story about love, loss, tragedy and the triumph of the human spirit. An honest look at an immigrant’s story, and wanting to make a good life for oneself.

Absolute win.

I never give 5 stars but this is the best thing I've read in a long time. Engaging characters, realistic storyline, good narration (crisp and not annoying) and touching. It seemed light when I chose it but had surprising depth that will leave me thinking about it for a long time. Highly recommend and would read this author again.

Amazing Book Spanning Decades!

WOW! I have so many positive things to say about this amazing book spanning decades in the life of Hubert Bird. The story moves swiftly through time & covers many ups & downs in a funny & heartbreaking way. I just loved the way the author describes the characters & locations in the story. The narrator expertly transitioned through many different accents & dialects depicted despite age & gender of the characters.

The book title: ‘All the Lonely People” was a perfect choice as it aptly reminded me of some of the lyrics to the Beatles song ‘Eleanor Rigby’
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

The story was meaningful & very poignant to me as my late parents also emigrated from Jamaica to the UK during the Windrush years- coincidently today - June 22 - is 'UK Windrush Day'! I must admit that I laughed hard so many times & cried a lot when I came to the realization of how very realistic many elements of this work of fiction is. I became really invested & interested in the outcome of the characters while reading. This audible book was great & I listened every day till the satisfying end, I highly recommend picking this audible. Overall 5/5 Performance 5/5 Story 5/5

Got to love the Daily Deals

I'm sure I already wrote this review. The book was OK but not as much depth to the characters that could have been

Mostly good

Narrator was excellent ! I loved the way the story was developed with alternating past and present narratives. I loved the story too until there was about two hours left. It had so much potential but the turn it took just ruined it for me. Didn’t find it well explained or believable. Too bad. The characters were wonderful and it did remind me a little of ‘A Man Called Ove.’

Very unique and heartwarming

I read a review that said this was similar to a Man Called Ove, and perhaps, but it is very different also. There were a few surprises that brought me to tears. Loved the characters. What a wonderful book.
