About this listen

“Like all the best suspense novels, Alone will leave you shaken. . . . You can't wait to see what happens next.”—People

Who can you turn to when you’re at your most vulnerable?

State Trooper Bobby Dodge watches a tense hostage standoff through the scope of his sniper rifle. Dodge has only one second to react, or a woman and her child may die.

Where can you hide when this killer comes?

The woman at the other end of Bobby Dodge’s rifle isn’t only in trouble—she is trouble. Cool, beautiful, and dangerously sexy, Catherine Rose Gagnon’s life will change in an instant of violence.

It’s the most terrifying place to be. . . .

When Bobby pulls the trigger, someone will die. And then no one will be above suspicion, no one beyond harm. And no one will see death coming until it has them cornered, helpless, and alone.

Good intriguing storyline. But hard to listen to because the Narrator was so terrible, especially for male and child voices.

female narrator for mostly all male characters, didn't work. emphasized the clues to 'the answers' too much spoiling the next turn of events. that's the point of these stories, get the I've figured it out, or what's next, or a surprise. was hard to make to end. wouldn't have if not an audio book.

As Lisa Gardner Mystery-Thrillers go, this is a middling entry. In this one, a police sniper may have been manipulated into assassinating an unwanted husband - or maybe the guy had it coming: it's an intriguing scenario. The book includes a signature Gardner twisty-turny plot with multiple peripheral murders (where every mindblowing crime makes sense - tied together neatly - at the end), uncomfortably visceral descriptions, disturbing sociopathic antagonists, and a captivating schema that prompts readers to think during quiet times.. but involves uncharacteristically unlikeable characters for a Gardner offering.
Despite a couple of deficiencies, however, this mystery is very, very good.

Unfortunately, Anna Fields was enlisted to read the book. Her performance is undeniably professional in terms of diction/enunciation, timbre, cadence, and pacing.. but she's overdramatic and her voice-acting is genuinely groanworthy (Fields is much more suited to read non-fiction than projects that require emotive performance and character repertoires).

I am thankful that Random House Audio decided to go with readers other than Fields for future Lisa Gardner books in their catalog. Fields's genuinely execrable voice-acting reduces this captivating thriller from a respectable 8.5 stars to 5.5 stars out of 10. 'Alone' is a creditable sample of Lisa Gardner's writing - but consider other entries in the 'D.D.Warren/Flora Dane' series when they ask for your Credit.

Let Down By Criminally Bad Narration
