Story
One question, a split-second decision, and Brian Darby lies dead on the kitchen floor. His wife, state police trooper Tessa Leoni, claims to have shot him in self-defense, and bears the bruises to back up her tale. For veteran detective D. D. Warren it should be an open-and-shut case. But where is their six-year-old daughter? As the homicide investigation ratchets into a frantic statewide search for a missing child, D. D. Warren must partner with former lover Bobby Dodge to break through the blue wall of police brotherhood, seeking to understand the inner workings of a trooper’s mind while also unearthing family secrets.

Fabulous Story, Just Too Much Sex
This was an amazing story. had me on the edge of my seat. Huge Lisa Gardner fan. My Audible library is filled with her buuuuut, this one went overboard on the sex.
I'm no prude, and for the mental state of Jim Beckett, sure, let's hear his fantasies, but the other characters...the details...too much.
It detracted for the storyline, and was placed at times no one would actually be having sex.
Really started to get on my nerves, I wasn't up for 50 Shades when I added this book to my library.
With that said, take out the overly detailed sex and this may be one of my favorite Lisa G. books.
I will be having Jim Beckett nightmares for weeks! :)

The narration is excellent!
the sex scenes sounded forced and like they were written by someone that hadn't ever had good sex. They didn't add to the story so I suspect they were requested by a publisher.
Narration was good given the material. Narrator's voice is clear, pleasant, and well modulated. Enunciation is excellent and cadence is near perfect.

entertaining.
I was interested in the story, but taken out of it by too many "he was a grizzled lawless heroic dangerous man, and she was a damaged young beautiful quasi-virginal victim, and he more or less forced himself on her but she LOVED IT and subsequently learned to find herself and then save him" moments. I googled the author to check if it wasn't a man writing under a female name (not that only men write sexist cliches, just hoped a woman didn't write this, because I'm also sexist I suppose). I am a fan of the genre, and I enjoyed much of this book, but not sure I'll check out further books in the series.

Terrible
My expectations were not high. I was looking for a thriller that would keep my interest on long walks. That’s it. However, this was so ridiculous that I was embarrassed for myself for listening to it for as long as I did. Full disclosure, I did not finish.
As already stated, the sex scenes were unbearable. Not due to the graphic nature, but because they ( as well as the characters) seem to be written by a very angry, psychotic male. It really reads like a low budget porn. Don’t waste your time.

Not what I hoped for... definitely disappointed
I have read other books by this author. I found this one to be so in necessarily vulgar. The storyline didn’t need it. I cringed if anyone came into the room as I was listening.
I also thought the ending was a dud.

Did not enjoy
I was very disappointed with this audiobook. So many good reviews and I just don't get it. To me it was a cross between a bad Lifetime movie and a cheesy action movie. Very unrealistic and over the top in so many ways. The sex scenes did nothing for it, in fact there was nothing romantic about it at all. Wish I'd used that credit on something else. The narrator was great though (for what she had to work with!)

Really Confused by the Good Reviews
First, let me start off by saying I did not finish the entire book. There are about three hours left and I personally can't imagine that anything happens in the last three hours of the book that would result in me recommending it. This book is simply horrible. The characters are not likable, their personality/behavior is inconsistent and unbelievable, the mystery portion is not really mysterious or interesting and the confrontations are extremely anti-climatic.
I've seen the phrase "gratuitous sex" thrown around in reviews and I've never let that deter me from purchasing a book because I generally believe most people are prudes. But, this book is full of unnecessary and unbelievable sex scenes. It really seems like the author wanted to write about aggressive violent sex and the mystery/crime aspect was an afterthought.Or the thought you have after the afterthought.
** Spoiler Alert** ....kinda.
So the main character is supposed to be a traumatized battered wife in need of protection from her psycho serial killer ex husband. She reaches out to a former military trained mercenary. Sounds really good so far, right? But, the former mercenary is now an angry, aggressive, violent drunk. Oh, and he's out of shape. Naturally, you would think that this would not be an ideal partnership for the battered wife. But, you would be wrong. Even after he body slams her (while naked ) and attempts to remove her from his premises, she refuses to leave and instead moves in with him. After just a few short days together and a couple of extremely inappropriate and violent interactions between the two, she falls for him and they have extremely violent sex...repeatedly. I mean they have more random aggressive sex than they do anything else. Which kind of explains why the first confrontation between the former mercenary and the ex husband result in the former mercenary being seriously injured.
I just really couldn't get into this book. It had potential, but failed miserably.

Too Much Sex
I love Lisa Gardner and thought this was a new book but once getting into it, it was obvious an older book from before Quincy and Rainey got together. I liked the characters and was intrigued by Becket and would have loved to know more about his backstory. The only huge disappointment was the sex scenes and the detail attached to them. There were far too many and it added nothing to the book.

First novel in Gardner's FBI Profiler series
This 1998 novel was both Lisa Gardner's first non-romance novel and the first book in her FBI Profiler series. Only it should be considered a standalone rather than first of a series. FBI profiler Pierce Quincy does appear in THE PERFECT HUSBAND but as a relatively minor character rather than as protagonist. Quincy or his FBI agent daughter or his second wife Rainie Conor are the protagonists in every novel in the series. The other way this novel stands out is it is the very last of Gardner's non-romance books to make it into audio format.
THE PERFECT HUSBAND is an excellent mystery/thriller novel. Sarah Zimmernam's narration is outstanding.
