Publisher's Summary

#1 New York Times bestseller Lisa Gardner returns with an unpredictable thriller that puts fan favorites D. D. Warren and Flora Dane on a shocking new case that begins with a vicious murder and gets darker from there.

A man is dead, shot three times in his home office. But his computer has been shot twelve times, and when the cops arrive, his pregnant wife is holding the gun.

D. D. Warren arrives on the scene and recognizes the woman - Evie Carter - from a case many years back. Evie's father was killed in a shooting that was ruled an accident. But for D.D., two coincidental murders is too many.

Flora Dane sees the murder of Conrad Carter on the TV news and immediately knows his face. She remembers a night when she was still a victim - a hostage - and her captor knew this man. Overcome with guilt that she never tracked him down, Flora is now determined to learn the truth of Conrad's murder.

But D.D. and Flora are about to discover that in this case the truth is a devilishly elusive thing. As layer by layer they peel away the half-truths and outright lies, they wonder: How many secrets can one family have?

What the critics say

“Gardner knows how to weave a deeply moving and psychological thriller that pulls no punches in its authenticity. She is one of the masters when it comes to crime fiction. Fans of her novels will consider this one of her best, and newcomers will be in awe of the compelling story and unpredictability of the proceedings.” (Associated Press)

“This is easily Gardner’s most ambitious, complex tale ever, a shattering emotional journey that’s utterly relentless in pacing and suspense. Tell everyone that Never Tell is an early candidate for the best thriller of 2019.” (Providence Journal

“Nailbiting.... Gardner’s commendable storytelling will keep fans eagerly waiting for the next outing for D.D. and Flora.” (Publishers Weekly

Good read

Overall I really enjoyed this book. I like the characters and look forward to reading the next one in this series. It’s a great book for people who enjoy this genre, it’s well written, and keeps you guessing until the end who the bad guy is.

Enjoyable!

I always like that a book keeps drawing me into it and I often found it difficult to stop reading. Excellent narration and storyline.

Great book!

I was addicted to listening to this one. I even went to be early just to listen for longer. The story is complex yet easy to follow. I liked that you just don't know what is really going on until the last minute.

Confusion

This storyline was interesting and I enjoyed how each chapter was titled after the three main characters. My confusion was caused by the dramatic change in Flora’s character. I understood how she went from a damaged, scarred victim to a strong survivor. It was waffling back and forth which I found confusing thinking Is this the same character? to wondering How did she become so bad-assed so quickly? Her character was not cohesive.
I also had very little liking for Deedee, both in her private life and her professional one. I never felt this way about her in Gardner’s other books. I know she is supposed to be a tough cop but she too often lacked warmth and appeared brash, acerbic and impatient about getting to the truth.

Always a "Page Turner"

We often listen in the car, this one got us planning road trips so we could finish, DD and Flora are a force to be reckoned with...

Annoyingly Confusing Narration.. But Great

Don't get me wrong.. Kirsten Potter's reading is typically excellent when considering diction, timbre, cadence, pacing, and tone aspects - but this story is written in three POVs - two of them from the First Person Limited Perspective - and unless you listen carefully at the head of each chapter, you can't really differentiate exactly who is telling the story *this* time. Potter's performances for the three main storytellers (ethically conflicted Boston PD Homicide Detective 'D.D.Warren'; psychologically damaged Abduction Survivor/Vigilante 'Flora Dane'; and jawdroppingly complicated Suspect 'Evie Carter') aren't sufficiently distinctive to make the audiobook easy-to-consume [you can't have this story playing in the background while you do other tasks.. it demands concentration].
Brilliance Audio producers dropped the ball on this one somewhat.
Fortunately, the "beyond the case" character development is satisfying for followers of the overall series, the author's descriptions are as uncomfortably visceral as 'Warren and Dane' readers have come to expect, and the plotting in this Mystery-Thriller ranks among Lisa Gardner's best.. easily good enough to make up for any deficiencies in the presentation.

In toto, 'Never Tell' merits 8 stars out of 10. It's much better if you're able to pay close attention - but even as it stands, 8/10 is an awfully good score. Can Recommend.

Good book, terrible story teller.

I like Lisa's writting. The stories capture your imagination and holds it tightly, even though this one gave away its secrets half way through. The narration on the other hand was not good... not quite awful but pretty close. The narrator was dramatic, over indulgant and looked down on every aspect of the story. It felt as though she had some hidden agenda to come out the fictor over the "little characters" she read about. It made a very good story only somewhat ok.

It was pretty good

The author had me guessing at a couple points. Other parts, I almost knew where the storyline was going, and it was really nice.
It’s a combo
