Publisher's Summary

Lillian Haswell, brilliant daughter of the local apothecary, yearns for more adventure and experience than life in her father's shop and their small village provides. She also longs to know the truth behind her mother's disappearance, which villagers whisper about but her father refuses to discuss. Opportunity comes when a distant aunt offers to educate her as a lady in London. Exposed to fashionable society and romance--as well as clues about her mother--Lilly is torn when she is summoned back to her ailing father's bedside. Women are forbidden to work as apothecaries, so to save the family legacy, Lilly will have to make it appear as if her father is still making all the diagnoses and decisions. But the suspicious eyes of a scholarly physician and a competing apothecary are upon her. As they vie for village prominence, three men also vie for Lilly's heart.

Very good story

I love these types of stories that tell a story over years. It's much more interesting. It ended in a way I was not expecting. worth a listen

Historical society rules on women

The story is told with a sweet woman's voice that sounds like someone you imagine from the past talking. The scenery is well set up to make you feel your there. If you are s reader of past, women, struggle to make our place. This is must listen too!

audio poorly edited

good story but the chapter announcements were abrupt and unnecessary music was occasionally thrown in at the end and beginning of some of the audio pieces. it was inconsistent and honestly I found it detracted from the book. additionally, several retakes were not edited properly, leaving repeated lines with different inflections which were again very distracting!

Touching

I enjoyed this touching story, but didn't care for several of the narrator's characters' voices and accents. They sounded more like they came from the Appalachian Mountains in the 1800's. Still, she acted the parts well. It was well worth listening to.

Good listen

I did not like the narration. Her accents weren’t great. Also, the recording had strange, intermittent spurts of music. It wasn’t with every new chapter, so I couldn’t quite figure it out. The recording quality was sub par as well. There were several instances of the narrator repeating the same line, like different takes that did not get edited out. This is not my favorite Julie Klassen, but I still enjoyed it.

good story

My only dissapointment was that they did not show Roderick Marlow settled and happy before the story ended. And that he never voiced his affection to Lilly.

Very endearing

Loved the whole story, very clean and keeps you guessing to who Lilly will choose to love. Bit of mystery but not in-depth on that mainly was like a story of who could be a friend you’ve known your whole life. Happy Listening or reading whichever is your preferred method!

Good story…… it’s just drawn out too long.

Good story and great info on past apothecaries. Just a bit too long of a story.
