About this listen

The fifth novel of the galaxy-spanning Sun Eater series merges the best of space opera and epic fantasy, as Hadrian Marlowe continues down a path that can only end in fire.

The galaxy is burning.

With the Cielcin united under one banner, the Sollan Empire stands alone after the betrayal of the Commonwealth. The Prophet-King of the Cielcin has sent its armies to burn the worlds of men, and worse, there are rumors … whispers that Hadrian Marlowe is dead, killed in the fighting.

But it is not so. Hadrian survived with the help of the witch, Valka, and together they escaped the net of the enemy having learned a terrible truth: the gods that the Cielcin worship are real and will not rest until the universe is dark and cold.

What is more, the Emperor himself is in danger. The Prophet-King has learned to track his movements as he travels along the borders of Imperial space. Now the Cielcin legions are closing in, their swords poised to strike off the head of all mankind.

Great ending

Again I find myself disinterested in the action sequences, but the overarching story is amazing, the beginning and the ending were great.

Sun Eater Keeps Getting Better

Rating: 4.75☆ (Exemplary)

Blurb Review: Ruocchio continues to build and build this series, somehow not only maintaining the quality of his early works, but building upon them towards what I can only imagine will be a stunning, genre-defining finale in book seven. The Sun Eater series rules and is only getting better.

Worldbuilding/Immersion: 4.5☆
Ruocchio continues to excellently build his sci-fi setting with more planets, technologies, and wonders to behold in Ashes of Man.

Characters: 5☆
At this point Ruocchio has developed Hadrian far beyond the point that most authors get the chance to go with their protagonists. His work here is exemplary.

Plot: 4.25☆
Lacking some of the twists and turns of Demon in White, and some of the focussed drive of Kingdoms of Death, this novel still catapults the reader toward an explosive finale and sets the stage for new developments to come over the last two books.

Overall Investment/Emotional Impact: 5☆
Oof.

Writing/Prose: 4.5☆
Ruocchio is still so, so good. Everything from his action sequences to his introspection just shines in the reading.

Audiobook Narration: 5☆
Man, Samuel Roukin was the EXACT right man for this series. I can't imagine anyone else portraying this universe.

Content Warning: Violent sci-fi action.
