Enjoyable.. with A Little Too Much Familiarity

This adaptation of a Joss Wheedon & John Cassaday X-men effort is excellent. Peter David does a fabulous job interpreting Wheedon's sense of fun and gift for making 2-dimensional comic book characters relatable. David admirably injects deeper motives into this novelization while sticking to a plot involving Cyclops and Emma Frost's attempt to make mutants more heroic and acceptable to humanity - while simultaneously confronting a mysterious Alien threat (along with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.) and the challenge of a mutant "cure". It's a little too much to pack into a 5½ hour story, but the plot is well-paced, action-driven, and pleasantly sinuous (packed with twists and turns). This is a distracting adventure.
The biggest drawback to the story is that Wheedon tries a little too hard to make these fantasy characters true-to-life: the banter, petty rivalries, and "bitchiness" is too extreme (arguing over who gets to sit on which simulated Hawaiian island in the Danger Room, for example). It gets oddly irritating.

It must be noted that the full cast performance is incredible, however. Voice-acting, modulation effects, and judicious background noise combine to generate a cinema-quality atmosphere. Marvel Audio does a brilliant job bringing this graphic novel arc to the Audiobook audience.

Despite a too-jocular (occasionally juvenile) tone, this radioplay-style adaptation of a cartoonish but very entertaining Marvel story merits 7.5 stars out of 10.
