  • Join Davar Ardalan, a seasoned media technologist with experience at National Geographic, NPR News, and IVOW AI, as she explores the transformative role of artificial intelligence in media. In this engaging 3-part series, "AI and Media Insights," Ardalan, the Founder of TulipAI, helps journalists understand the capabilities and limitations of AI technology, particularly in content creation. At TulipAI, we have been producing trainings on audio innovations for journalists and examining the ethical considerations of AI voices. We produced this podcast series talking to ChatGPT to test these new AI tools and showcase their range of capabilities in voice, research, and engagement. TechGPT, our AI co-host, uses the ChatGPT voice of Sky, which ironically has been paused, illustrating the evolving nature of AI technology. Notably, in our 3-part series, TechGPT listens to audio clips, reacts naturally, and conducts live research during conversations, offering a window into how an AI processes biased data and suggests ways to address it. Despite its still robotic voice, it showcases the potential of AI in media, making the experiment of having an AI co-host "Live-to-tape" a interesting endeavor. Additionally, TechGPT's ability to translate content into multiple languages demonstrates its multilingual capabilities, further underlining the groundbreaking nature of this early-stage series. Audio segments were edited to remove pauses and shorten the conversation. Episode 1: AI and Content Creation Discover the capabilities, limitations, and ethical concerns of AI in media. Ardalan and TechGPT discuss OpenAI's decision to pause the use of the Sky voice to address ethical issues surrounding AI voice mimicking celebrities. The episode highlights the promise of AI in transforming content creation while emphasizing the importance of ethical AI development.

In the inaugural episode of "AI and Media Insights," host Davar Ardalan, formerly of NPR and National Geographic and now a leader in training journalists on audio innovation at TulipAI, addresses the ethical considerations of AI voice technology. Ironically, Ardalan found herself re-recording this first episode due to the controversy surrounding the use of the ChatGPT voice of Sky.

This episode engages in an open discussion about the decision to use a different AI voice from ChatGPT. This change was necessitated by significant ethical concerns, triggered by an incident where actress Scarlett Johansson publicly criticized OpenAI for using a voice similar to hers without her consent.

Spurred by a conversation with Digital Editor Mike Janssen at Current, Ardalan reevaluates the responsibilities of media creators in deploying AI technologies. This episode examines the balance between innovation and ethical standards, aiming to inform journalists and the broader public about the careful considerations necessary when integrating AI into media.
