Publisher's Summary

Scorio will rise from the ashes to conquer the 10 layers of hell.

Reborn without memories, Scorio learns that he is a Great Soul, a legendary defender of the ancient city of Bastion. That within the hallowed halls of the Academy and under the stern eyes of the underworld’s greatest instructors he will enjoy enormous privilege, rediscover unique and wondrous powers, and one day return to the millennium-old battle against their infernal foes.

Until he is betrayed. Singled out and sentenced to die for crimes he can't remember, Scorio is hurled to his doom - and forgotten.

But from even the dimmest spark an inferno may one day rage.

Clawing his way back from oblivion, Scorio vows to return to the Academy at any cost. To emerge from the ruins and within those golden walls defeat his elite classmates in a quest to ascend the ranks and change the course of history. For only then will he learn about his forgotten past and why his enemies have rightly feared him since the day he was reborn.

Great listen

I really like the reader and it’s a great book, well worth the credit since it’s so long.

Really Really Good

I wasn't expecting this one to be so good because I'd never heard it mentioned but it ended up being fantastic. The story didn't have the "customary boring section" most books have. Bastion was captivating and action packed for THE ENTIRE 38 HOURS which is very impressive and not an exaggeration. The magic system is awesome and the main character has incredible room for his powers to progress in later books. The main character is very likeable and I found myself really caring about what happened to him and his companions. His companions had interesting/distinct personalities and I was just as interested in their progression as I was the main storyline. The book is written in single point of view besides the interludes which makes it even more impressive that the author kept the story so engaging throughout. The story is constantly moving forward with many unexpected twists and turns and the world is rich and exciting. I am so happy to add this book to my top 10 and I cannot wait for the rest in the series. I honestly cant say enough good about this one. Its an ambitious and very well written coming of age, heroic story with a twist.

Fantastic

Simply fantastic book. Progressive fantasy doesn’t get any better than this and this easily ranks among my top series. Such a cool world and interesting writing that is very unique.

Enjoyable if you can ignore the flaws.

Book starts a little painfully with the character development but starts picking up around chapter 5. You can clearly tell the author is creative and intelligent. He managed to create a whole new world society and a twist on magical abilities. It is difficult creating a new world from scratch so I am not surprised there are conflicts with some of the technical sides of things such as how the timeline often conflicts with itself. I do feel a little more editing would iron out most of the issues. I was also highly annoyed with the main character as he repeatedly expect everyone to keep to their word while feeling he only needs to do so when convenient. It's possible it's meant to be part of the characters evolution but it still made it hard to fall in love with Scorio. The last complaint I had lies in how many times we're led one way only be told it was all irrelevant. Was alot of extra fat to the book that didn't real do much more than kill a couple chapters. With those complaints out of my system I still found things to enjoy about it and will likely listen to the second book when it comes out.

A good but slow burn to a great finish

A slow burn to a great finish. The narration by Nick Podehl is top tier as usual.

Soooooo Gooooood

Amazing, epic story with amazing narration! The first 20 minutes were a little confusing but made brilliant sense as the story progressed. The characters and the unique world they exist in were beautifully developed by the author and beautifully brought to life by the narrator.
I will definitely be looking at more books from this author and narrator. There is a sequel to this book coming to audible......please, take my money!!! So good.

A decent start.

Hooo man that book was way too long. I was allmost RELIEVED when it was over. The setting was very interesting and the mystery surrounding great souls kept me hooked but maaaaan it was a struggle. The dialog between characters was so wonder bread boring i could predict what they would say next. It was like early 2000's sitcom level of cringe staring the "Big Bro" guy friend and the wholesome "girl next door" chick friend. The main character doesn't really have any stand out traits to me, sometimes he is stubborn other times he gives up easy, sometimes hes intelligent and sometimes he is an idiot, sometimes he is cool headed and other times he puts the well being of his friends on the line. The best parts were definitely the action sequences, very well written and easy to follow. Nick podhel of course was amazing as usual.

Not a bad start but I hope the next book has a good summary because i am NOT listening to this again.

p.s take a shot everytime a strong eccentric female character advances the plot.
