About this listen

The New York Times bestselling author of All the Stars and Teeth brings to life a highly romantic, Gothic-infused world of wealth, desire, and betrayal.

Nineteen-year-old Signa Farrow, orphaned as a baby, has been raised by a string of guardians, each more interested in her wealth than her well-being—and each has met an untimely end. Her last remaining relatives are the Hawthornes, an eccentric family living at the glittering and gloomy estate of Thorn Grove. Thorn Grove’s patriarch, Elijah, mourns his late wife, Lillian, through wild parties and drink, while eldest son Percy grapples for control of the family’s waning reputation and daughter Blythe suffers from the same mysterious illness that killed her mother. And when Lillian’s spirit confronts Signa and claims she was poisoned, Signa realizes that Blythe could be next to die.

Signa’s best chance of uncovering the culprit and solving Lillian’s murder is an alliance with Death himself—the very man she hates most. And Death, that fascinating, dangerous shadow who has never been far from her side, shows her that their connection may be more powerful than she ever dared imagine.

Emotive. This series is a bit YA/NA for my liking, but the concept is new and refreshing. I enjoy how or FMC doesn't jive with the sentiments and fixations of the time period. Picked up book 2, Foxglove, right after.

I listened to the audiobook version, narrated by Kristin Atherton. She does a wonderful job and bringing the various characters to life.

Intriguing idea!

I went in with low expectations and ended up really enjoying this. The gothic Thorn Grove setting is deliciously atmospheric—ghosts, family secrets, and a satisfying murder mystery—and the relationship between Signa and Death was chef’s kiss. The beginning is a little slow, but once the mystery tightens, it’s hard to stop listening. The ending twist + epilogue had me ready for book two. ⭐️4.5/5

Beautifully written, gothic, haunting, and romantic, BELLADONNA is perfect for anyone looking for a romantic story to read over the Halloween season. It's well written, filled with drama and found family, and has a pair of complex characters.

BELLADONNA tells the story of Signa, a young woman who is seemingly immune to death, which can't be said for the people around her. After unintentionally coming into an inheritance and learning about a family she didn't know she had, Signa encounters a mysterious poisoning and an entity beyond anything she could ever imagine.

Signa is a great character for a number of reasons. Firstly, is that she is believable and has an earnest soul. She simply wants to belong and find a family. She is someone I constantly rooted for, someone who was looking for clues to a deadly mystery, and who wished to find her own power. In contrast, Death is a unique entity who toed the line between impossible power and empathy. I found the chemistry between the two of them to be enjoyable. There are also many side characters who have their own merits and flaws, making for rich relationships and dialogue. Everyone had clear motivations and there were no outright villains.

Given that this is a story of family and bonds, the plot becomes more complicated as the secrets are revealed. I enjoyed seeing how all these lives were connected and how the interactions changed once all the truths came to light.

Despite all the evidence to the contrary, BELLADONNA does have genuine scares and intense moments with spirits. It all leads to some powerful and memorable moments, since the prose is very visual. I didn't expect it to get so dark, though I hardly complained!

The epilogue ends on a cliffhanger and I'm genuinely interested in seeing where things go from here. Highly recommended as a fall read or for anyone who likes a romantic Gothic story with ghosts and layered characters!
