This had all the elements to be such a good read, it was ticking so many of my boxes, but the execution just didn’t quite land for me. I still enjoyed it, but it wasn’t as good as it could have been, and definitely should have been better.The pacing dragged at times and the tone leaned a little cheesy (though I think that was intentional). The friendships were also hard for me to buy into: characters go from strangers to declaring how much they love each other without us seeing the growth in between, which made it harder to feel invested in their relationships. And then the ending… I know this is Book 1 of 2 (with no release date yet for Book 2), so I wasn’t expecting everything to be tied up neatly. But the way it ended felt frustrating and unrealistic — like there’s no way she’d just go off to bed without getting any answers 😅 That said, the premise is intriguing, the magic/monsters setup has loads of potential, and I’m still intrigued enough to read Book 2 when it comes out. 🎧 audiobook note: I read and listened to this book. The narrators were great, Savannah Peachwood, and Jason Clarke performed it duet style which is the best, and should be the ONLY way audiobooks are recorded in my opinion!

This is a strange review for me to write. I've read over half of Jaymin Eve's books. and for the most part, have loved them. This story, I struggled to continue. It's over 10 hours of listening time, and I finally gave up with 2 hours and 20 minutes left.

The main female character is 22 years old. She's incredibly emotionally sensitive and the epiyome of the stereotypical damsel. I dislike storylines where the FMC is in constant need of saving, regardless of whether the saving involves her physical safety, or emotional safety. This girl can't handle being strong in any way for the life of her. Her relationships with everyone from her siblings, he parents, and her new school besties are all so "fluffy", "cheesy," or surface-level "aaawe, isn't that cute!?" They don't allow for any kind of complex social growth that true relationships have. Paisley's character lacks depth, and so does every other person the reader meets. She's the epitome of "special for no reason that anyone can tell" type of character.

The narration is an MF duet, and each is great at their job; however, the plot is slow, the rational for events is missing (not in a way to imbue a sense of mystery, but straight up absent), and good narration can't make a story on it's own.

I've been an avid reader of Jaymin Eve for 10 years. Perhaps my struggle with this book is that I expected more of a mature read, with the assumption that her writing may grow alongside some readership - my own fallacy of thought, I suppose. I may just be outgrowing the content of this author. I just turned 40... it's difficult to enjoy immature, naive, and fluffy characters with little substance and a plot with holes so big, an asteroid could pass through without contact.

The first Jaymin Eve book that wasn't to my liking. Weird!
