Of all the things humans rely on plants for - sustenance, beauty, medicine, fragrance, flavor, fiber - surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate or calm, fiddle with or completely alter, the qualities of our mental experience. Take coffee and tea: People around the world rely on caffeine to sharpen their minds. But we do not usually think of caffeine as a drug, or our daily use as an addiction, because it is legal and socially acceptable.

Publisher's Summary
A New York Times Best Seller
A Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book of 2020
Named a Best Book of 2020 by NPR
“A fascinating scientific, cultural, spiritual and evolutionary history of the way humans breathe - and how we’ve all been doing it wrong for a long, long time.” (Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Big Magic and Eat Pray Love)
No matter what you eat, how much you exercise, how skinny or young or wise you are, none of it matters if you’re not breathing properly.
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing: Take air in, let it out, repeat 25,000 times a day. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices like Pranayama, Sudarshan Kriya, and Tummo and teams up with pulmonary tinkerers to scientifically test long-held beliefs about how we breathe.
Modern research is showing us that making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can jump-start athletic performance; rejuvenate internal organs; halt snoring, asthma, and autoimmune disease; and even straighten scoliotic spines. None of this should be possible, and yet it is. Drawing on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry, and human physiology, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head. You will never breathe the same again.
Editorial Review
Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art is James Nestor’s deep dive into how humans breathe and the impact this simple act can have on all aspects of our lives. He goes beyond the simple ins and outs of breath. He looks at everything from pulmonary science and lung capacity tests to ancient breathing techniques to determine where humans have lost our former breathing skills - and attempt to learn how to get them back.
Hailed as one of the best science books of 2020 by NPR, this bestseller is a fascinating listen. Journalist James Nestor brings all his reporting and investigative skills to this intriguing topic for an eye-opening experience that will change how you think about the simple act of breathing. From breathing exercises to lowering blood pressure and what it means to take a deep breath. Nestor uses modern research and honest curiosity to explore the respiratory system. He offers an education on the benefits of oxygen advantage and how learning to become a better breather can improve your life and overall health.
Breath by James Nestor is a natural breath of fresh air. This transformative book teaches us how breathing connects to the brain, the immune system, and the entire way the body functions. Whether you are searching for answers to sleep apnea, general shortness of breath, or health care issues like autoimmune disease, understanding how we breathe - and how to be a better breather - can have life-changing effects. Nestor narrates the book himself, adding his depth of knowledge and genuine curiosity to the experience. His keen interest in popular science and careful style makes for an exciting and informative listen that will change how you think about breathing.

wow! thank you!! life changing information!!!
I appreciated everything after the forth Chapter so much! Even the thank you at the end were inspiring to listen to. I was referred to your book through Mark Rashid's books on horsemanship, specifically Nature in Horsemanship.
I loved your informative stories! Your own studies and experiences were so relatable! I also loved hearing the hard work others have put in, and being informed of so many amazing studies.
Such a great book once you get through how and why humans lungs and sinuses are the way they are. That part of the science is a little more faith based in my opinion. Thankfully it didnt cheapen my opinion of the writing to much, and I continued on!
The rest of the book was life changing...so helpful for my healing journey! Thank you!
I needed to be honest about the beginning though ,that's what I'd want🥰
Blessings

Illuminating book
This is an exciting trip through the science and ancient methods of breathing. Nestor’s exploration is truly exciting. There is sufficient information in the recording to permit the listener to begin using the techniques which are simple. Nestor has a website associated with the book which offers videos as well. Also a bibliography appears on his website. An excellent overview of knowledge about Breath. Written in an entertaining way as well. Reading is well done.

I have a bad back and learned from physical therapist how to breath properly and it actually helped. Then I go to a couple different group events around food and wellbeing and sure enough they teach us to breath where I also learned of anders Ollson and conscious breathing. Randomly found out about this book on NPR fresh air. It is utterly fascinating and reinforces everything i learned prior to this. I couldn’t stop listening. I have back, sleep and brain fog issues. Interesting
While I did find parts of this book interesting. I felt like 'correct breathing' was being treated as a cure-all for everything. There is a disclaimer near the end of the book that addresses that and states that it won't cure all your ills, but I still feel that 'curing all your ills' was the premise of the book. I also felt that it ran on a little long. Did we really need a blow by blow of what it is like to stuff silicone plugs up your nose for an extended period of time? And was anyone surprised that this was a bad thing to do for your health?

quackery
So many things here are wrong and silly it’s hard to know where to start. Very disappointing. I’d certainly like to believe some of this stuff but the explanations proposed are totally bogus to gross misinterpretation of questionable “experts”. The author (reads his own work here) can’t pronounce basic medical terminology, which is forgivable, but demonstrates he wrote this from dr google rather than speaking to a person. It’s obvious that they didn’t get a medical professional, or a high school biology student, to fact check it when he started talking about how venous blood is blue. This poor review is coming from an engineer and medical professional and athlete, with an interest in the purported subject matter. Do not waste your money/credit on this short fluff.

Waited 3 years for this, worth it!!!
Terrific read, it confirmed a lot of theories of mine on breath, training, yoga, and love.
Nestor owns the subject and communicates wisdom, insight, and healing through a sea of seemingly unrelated stories. Renegade scientists railing against the National Institute for Health's oversight blend into Swedish playboy scientists weave into eccentric British colonels who discover the secret to eternal life and youth as Ave Maria and Om Padme On echo against the walls of the readers riveted mind. Artists leave high society to live with tall, beautiful, orthodontically perfect native Americans who raise children better than homo modernis.
I want to read this book slowly enough to crawl through the bibliography; it is a novel containing multiple reads and practices that will heal it's readers. Enjoy!

EXCELLENT read, entertaining AND informative
I can't say enough about this book or its author, James Nestor. I heard him talk on the NPR podcast Fresh Air, and was really interested in what he had to say about breathing, how it really is a lost art, and how throughout ancient history people always took breath into account in everyday life and even healing practices - something that we modern day people don't even think of, maybe for their whole lives. I bought the audible book and have listened to it three times in a row, and know its a book I will keep coming back to. The message is amazing, especially for someone who deals with modern day illnesses (autoimmune) and anxiety. He approaches the topic very scientifically, but also with entertaining anecdotes about each sub-topic, there were several jaw-drop moments for me. He also has a GREAT voice, and is really nice to listen to! Honestly, he just seems like an overall great guy, like someone you'd like to meet or get to know. I have started incorporating a few of the breathing exercises into my daily life, especially the slow breathing, and I can immediately notice a calming effect and reduction in my anxiety. I would give 10 stars if I could.

Strange
I do not know the right word. It's interesting but also… weird. I mean, it would be really extraordinary if the scale of changes to the body as described were so significant. I wish there were footnotes to check the studies that are alluded to. If there is really something that significant as the book claim to all this, no doubt we will ear from it again with other work and more studies, more concrete and "academic". I do not think it's the author fault, but in that case, the audio format do not serve the text well. Although, if it were not for the audio format, I would never have found the time to even bother listening to something on the subject. No perfect solution, only tradeoffs.
