Publisher's Summary

From legendary Brazilian jujitsu and MMA master Rickson Gracie comes a riveting, insightful memoir that weaves together the story of Gracie’s stunning career with the larger history of the Gracie family dynasty and the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, showing how the connection between mind and body can be harnessed for success both inside and outside the ring.

Undefeated from the late 1970s through his final fight in the Tokyo Dome in 2000, Rickson Gracie amassed hundreds of victories in the street, on the mat, at the beach, and in the ring. He has joined the pantheon that includes Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, and Jackie Chan as one of the most famous martial artists of the 20th century. Jujitsu, the fighting style developed and pioneered by his family, has become one of the world’s most prominent martial arts, and Vale Tudo, the “anything goes” style of Brazilian street fighting over which the Gracies had a monopoly, was an early precursor to the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Simply put, without the Gracie family, there would be no sport of “MMA”, no four-billion-dollar UFC empire, and no “Brazilian jujitsu” at strip malls all across America.

In Breathe, for the first time, Rickson will share the full story of how his father and uncles came to develop jujitsu, what it was like to grow up among several generations of world-renowned fighters from the Gracie clan, and the principles and skills that guided him to his undefeated record. From learning to assert himself on the streets of Rio to gaining fame and honor in Japan and emerging through heartbreaking tragedy, the martial arts master shares tales of overcoming challenges, extolling universal virtues and showing listeners how pride and ego are the enemies of success.

With profound insights into the sport and way of life that only a studied legend can provide, Breathe is an entertaining and magnified view of an enduring legacy as well as an inspiring tale of weathering life’s complexities and overcoming them with style and grace.

Great principles for life

This was a great book. The story was brilliant and Rickson’s commentary on his decisions at the time and the lessons he learned through life are amazing. This isn’t just a book for people interested in martial arts, this is a book on how to live your life through guiding principles, good values and discipline. Rickson is truly an example of someone who devoted his mind body and spirit to what he believed in.

Well done narration

I enjoyed listening to this book that opened my eyes to Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Over all I think this is a sad life story of the Gracie family through the eyes of a great martial arts master. But at what cost. He was I think brought up in a psychologically abusive cult like family that stayed with him in life. That led to many poor family choices to pursue a course in life that he seemed, in his mind to have little choice. I believe that once you grow and have a marriage and family, they become what defines you as a success. Although I admire his martial art success I would not want to be like him

Narration

Excellent story. I recommend. However, where is the version narrated by Rickson Gracie himself?

Worth your time.

Listen. Be open, breathe, and grow. A great biography and something we should all hear. This is not a call to meditation or to be the best fighter. This is a call to demand the best of yourself via the lens of the warrior. And whether you know it or not we are all warriors on different battlefields. Obrigado Maestro Rickson!

Loved It!

We'll put together and narrated. A must read for anyone who's interested in how BJJ was in the early days through the lense of Rickson Gracie. Powerful story.

50 yrs of material

There is so much put in to this book. It is not a book about fighting but more about internal struggles, interactions with family, friends and the establishment of they. I really enjoyed this lesson and I am looking forward to listening to it again, as I am sure there will be more in the stories that I can pick up.
