Dan Abnett does it again

A unique space marines chapter gets a unique book written about them as we follow the leader of an elite squad of space marines through several deployments. Normally we only see a single mission in most 40k novels, while in this we get to see more of a "day in the life" take. And as a result, it makes for a very fast read/listen. And an entertaining one at that.

It has a "stylised" feel to it I can't fully explain. There came a point while listening to this where everything being described seemed like something out of a kick-@$$ Genndy Tartakovsky animation, which I then started to imagine, and that made it even more awesome. But the fact that Dan Abnett wrote this should be enough of a reason to check this book out.

My only complaint is that we don't get more of a feel for the entire squad, instead focusing more on their leader and their apothecary. This leads to the rest of the squad feeling somewhat samey, which is a little bit of a let down after Gaunt's Ghosts gave us such distinct characters, but it's not as egregious as other 40k books.

Masterful

Dan Abnett strikes gold yet again - introducing us to some of the most believable, endearing, and HUMAN space marines in the Warhammer World. Hard to believe this is his first time writing Space Marines!

Perfect for fans who prefer smaller squad-focused space marine novels. An excellent choice for Abnett fans. I love the Eisenhorn novels, but I think I actually like the Snakes even more!

Great listen.

Dan Abnett and Toby Longworth seems to be a combo that cannot be beaten. The great characters and writing from Abnett paired with the talented Toby Longworth made this book a great listen. If you're a fan of 40k wanting more awesome stories this will be right up your alley and if you're new to 40k this will be an awesome way to get more familiar with Space Marines and their culture.

New Iron Snakes Fan Has Been Made

I don't usually leave written reviews but I felt like I owed it to Mr. Abnett. This book is so very well written, paced, and adds something new to the 40K world. It's 2019 and until I downloaded this book had never heard of the Iron Snakes of Ithica, but now that I have my favorite SP Chapter has changed from Blood Angels to Iron Snakes. Such an awesome chapter. Dan knocked it out of the park once again.

Loved it!

My only disappointment was that they're a successor chapter of the space smurfs, but there's no mention of Bobby G thankfully lol

Well written, awesome characters, and great story

Dan Abnett and Toby Longworth are an awesome duo. I loved the story and the Astartes that were in it. I liked that the story wasn't one long tale of Bolter fire and cries of FOR THE EMPEROR, but was split up into several stories following a primary characters rise to rank and his different experiences throughout his life as a space marine. The best 40k books to me have always followed behind the eyes of a primary character, Eisenhorn, Garviel, Grimaldus to name a few, and Mr Abnett does a fantastic job at these particular types of storylines. The only complaint I have is the ending plot. I won't spoil it, but I felt the eldar/ork plot at the ending of the film could have been extended instead of just saying this squad went on to do this and this squad did that. I digress, the book is a fantastic listen and is completely worth the time and money. Thank you Dan and Toby.
