Story
In 1966 in a small town in Louisiana, a 19-year-old Black man named Gary Duncan pulled his car off the road to stop a fight. Duncan was arrested a few minutes later for the crime of putting his hand on the arm of a White child. Rather than accepting his fate, Duncan found Richard Sobol, a brilliant, 29-year-old lawyer from New York who was the only White attorney at "the most radical law firm" in New Orleans. Against them stood one of the most powerful white supremacists in the South, a man called simply "The Judge".

Publisher's Summary
In this high-stakes thriller, a number one New York Times best-selling author introduces CIA Agent Alisa Flynn, who is willing to go rogue if it means catching the most heartless band of criminals she's ever encountered.
When CIA Agent Alisa Flynn flaunts the rules by breaking into a mansion in the middle of the night, she skillfully circumvents alarms and outwits guards only to find herself standing in billionaire Gabe Korgan's study...busted by Korgan himself. This could cost her her job unless, in a split second, she can turn the tables and try to convince him to join her on the most important mission of her life.
In a ripped-from-the-headlines plot, schoolgirls in Africa have been kidnapped, and Alisa knows that Korgan has the courage, financial means, and high-tech weaponry to help rescue them. With so many innocent lives hanging in the balance, what she doesn't reveal is that one of those schoolgirls is like a little sister to her. But when the truth gets out, the stakes grow even higher.
Calling in additional assistance from renowned horse whisperer Margaret Douglas, Alisa and Gabe lay their plans, only to see them descend into chaos as the line between right and wrong wavers before them like a mirage. Every path is strewn with pitfalls, each likely to get them - or the hostages - killed. But with the help of a brave team and a horse with the heart of a warrior, they might just get out of this alive.
What the critics say
"Riveting.... Readers will keep guessing about the complex characters' underlying motivations as the plot races toward the stunning conclusion." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)
"This is dangerous, riveting and extremely awesome - adjectives that also describe Iris Johansen to a 'T.'" (Suspense Magazine)

Interesting
I liked the story but I do wish they would of had a man doing the male voices, especially Gorgon . I found that the narrator had the men talking to much like they didn’t give a darn and it was irritating at times. I liked the action when it got going, I kind of wish there was more. If you love Iris Johansen’s incorporation of animals and action, then this book will suit you well. The mixture of good guys and bad guys was fantastic as well as the dialogues between characters. Her love stories are often predictable, but still enjoyable. It was a fun listen.

Great story not greatly written.
The story was interesting enough that I finished the book but I found the writing to be so awkward that it often pulled me out of the story with stilted/awkward dialogue and weird tense usage that made me consciously think, “people don’t talk like that!”. The narrator was fine and her voices were distinct enough that I knew what character she was doing, but her accents were awful and I still have no idea which ones she was going for. She also read the main character in a very stiff way that made me feel like the character was neurodivergent (not that that’s a bad thing- I just don’t think she’s supposed to be).

Ouch
The good news is that if you don’t like a lot of description, you might like this book because there is very little of it. The bad news is that this is some of the absolute worst dialogue I have ever heard, and the entire book is dialogue. Had to stop halfway through.

The worst
I've never read/listened to an Iris Johansen before, but am a sucker for anything even remotely equine. So when I saw the horse along with mystery/thriller, I couldn't resist. Big mistake! Huge! The plot was stupid (talking horses, indeed), but the characters were the stuff of comic books. Absolutely ridiculous. I only kept listening to see what role the horses would play, but I should have stopped when they started talking. The narration was good - the narrator managed at least a dozen distinct voices well - but as another reviewer commented, her tone/delivery/emotions assigned to the lead female protagonist were not in keeping with the steely reserve one expects of a trained CIA agent. This book was simply awful, but it has at least spared me from having to listen to anything else from this author.

Not For Me
I generally enjoy Johansen's books and love the Eve Duncan series. But the main character of this book, Alisa, was ridiculous. She was way to insecure, indecisive and whiney to be the kick ass CIA agent she was supposed to be. The story seem to drag on forever and I had to force myself to finish. I like the character of Margaret and would have enjoyed more Margaret and Sasha and less Alisa. The narrator is the same as Eve Duncan series and she does the characters the exact same way. I also find the BLAM BLAM BOOM narration for gunshots very tedious. The male characters were typical but well written and performed.

Wow. So bad
I’ve read and listened to many Iris Johansen books so was expecting a certain level of quality. I’m not sure what happened here, but this was one of the worst books I’ve listened to. I kept hoping there would be some redeeming qualities, but couldn’t find any.
The dialogue, of which there was entirely too much, was stilted, completely unrealistic and wholly absurd. The characters weren’t properly fleshed out, and were caricatures. The storyline, which should have been interesting was rather limited for the length of this book.
The narrator didn’t enhance the experience. He spoke in a very robotic, staccato way,
