When the commissar is reunited with Inquisitor Amberley Vail, it seems his fears are realised. In this the fifth book in the popular Ciaphas Cain series, our hero is thrown into a deadly conspiracy that even he might not be able to emerge from alive.

Publisher's Summary
Audiobook four of the Ciaphas Cain series.
Listen to it because:
It's a tale of Cain alone (well, except for Jurgen, but he hardly counts), surrounded by enemies and desperate for a good cup of tanna tea....
The story:
Once again, reluctant hero Commissar Cain is catapulted into glory in the fourth instalment of this tremendously popular series. Escaping from a disastrous space battle, the commissar and his malodorous sidekick Jurgen crash-land behind enemy lines. Even the sly Cain can't avoid a straight fight this time, as the only way out is to round up what few troops they can find and fight their way back to safety. Unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of barbaric alien orks stand in their way.

More an audio drama then a simple book.
The cast, as always has done an incredible job, so much so that I ironically can’t bring myself to listen to the shorter stories voiced by a different reader.
The simple fact now is that Stephen Perring is Ciaphas Cain, just as Penelope Rawlings is Amberley.
I can’t wait for the best instalment.

Cain does it again!
Another easy to listen to Cain adventure. If you've read any of the others you know what you're getting, this book doesn't break the formula, but when you like the formula it's all good. Cain and Jurgen take on Orks in this one. It's pretty awesome. There is a good amount of guerrilla warfare and a desperate survivors trek across desert to get to the safety of Imperial forces. Without giving anything away, Cain has an epic chainsword duel with someone at one point.
The plot is pretty decent I think. As with previous books, events build on each other in interesting ways that lead to a satisfying end point. It's a solid action book.
You could definitely start here and not be lost but it's worth going back to the start of the series and enjoying each one before you get here.
Good to listen to on long drives or when walking the dog etc. I hope the rest of the series arrives to this platform.

if you like Chiphas' stories, this will not disapp
This story lives up to Chiphas' high standards. if anything it feels short with so much action, and good writing it's hard to stop listing.
The voice acting is outstanding and adds to the story in so many ways.
