Publisher's Summary

Audiobook four of the Ciaphas Cain series.

Listen to it because:

It's a tale of Cain alone (well, except for Jurgen, but he hardly counts), surrounded by enemies and desperate for a good cup of tanna tea....

The story:

Once again, reluctant hero Commissar Cain is catapulted into glory in the fourth instalment of this tremendously popular series. Escaping from a disastrous space battle, the commissar and his malodorous sidekick Jurgen crash-land behind enemy lines. Even the sly Cain can't avoid a straight fight this time, as the only way out is to round up what few troops they can find and fight their way back to safety. Unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of barbaric alien orks stand in their way.

More an audio drama then a simple book.

The cast, as always has done an incredible job, so much so that I ironically can’t bring myself to listen to the shorter stories voiced by a different reader.

The simple fact now is that Stephen Perring is Ciaphas Cain, just as Penelope Rawlings is Amberley.

I can’t wait for the best instalment.

Excellent as ever

I have fallen in love with both the story character CAIN and the voice actors that play all the parts. I wish all such books in the WH40K franchise were done so masterfully with multiple actors!

Cain does it again!

Another easy to listen to Cain adventure. If you've read any of the others you know what you're getting, this book doesn't break the formula, but when you like the formula it's all good. Cain and Jurgen take on Orks in this one. It's pretty awesome. There is a good amount of guerrilla warfare and a desperate survivors trek across desert to get to the safety of Imperial forces. Without giving anything away, Cain has an epic chainsword duel with someone at one point.
The plot is pretty decent I think. As with previous books, events build on each other in interesting ways that lead to a satisfying end point. It's a solid action book.
You could definitely start here and not be lost but it's worth going back to the start of the series and enjoying each one before you get here.
Good to listen to on long drives or when walking the dog etc. I hope the rest of the series arrives to this platform.

Another stellar performance

this series is so grand, a thrill ride of adventure and full of Cains sardonic humor. 10/10
I can't wait till the next audio book in the series.

Felicia!!!

This book is fantastic fun. Im glad to finally reach Cains first meeting with Felicia who shows up in other adventures. The first battle for Perlia being such a turning point in Cains career makes this a must read.

Honestly one of my favorites of the Cain series

Admittedly, I'm a fan of the Ciaphas Cain character and series as a whole. Grim and violent as the future of Warhammer 4k is, there's still bound to be a sarcastic smarta$$ in the universe somewhere and Cain fits the bill. The story isn't wholly original (moving a convoy of civilians through enemy lines, so kind of typical military fiction) but it is still engaging, the characters are pretty well-defined, and there is enough adventure, action, and humor for anyone. I've read them all before but even now, for some reason, this is one of the one's that stood out to me.
All in all a good listen and an essential read for anyone interested in the misadventures of Commisar Ciaphas Cain, Hero of the Imperium.
The performances, as usual, are spot on and look I forward to listening to the others in the series as they continue to be recorded.

A great prequel.

They have a actual tape recorder in the audible, if you like good acting in story telling this is excellent.

Luck of the Emperor

Well preformed and written. I first read this when it was originally published. The actor as Cain actually sounded like I thought Cain would all those years ago...
