Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Story
Ranger Quinn thought that morning would be like so many others. A hangover, a day off before going back to work keeping the lower levels of Zion City safe from itself. But a crime so horrific, so brutal in its execution, turns those mundane expectations around. An investigation into the death of a senior leader in their underground utopia safe from the harsh radioactive wastelands beyond their walls forces Quinn beyond that safety and into the world outside.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

Publisher's Summary
The hit Commune Series is back with book five! Rejoin some of your old favorites and plenty of unforgettable new ones on another deadly romp through post-apocalyptic America.
Books and Bug are polar opposites, despite their friendship. Rumors on the road speak of a hospital in Washington D.C. Leading a small group of survivors, including pregnant women, the two travel in earnest to provide the soon-to-be mothers a safe place to deliver.
Bug, a natural, charismatic leader, refuses to leave anyone behind while the other, Books, is a pragmatic social outsider who wishes not to be responsible for the safety of others. Together, they're exactly what this group needs to survive.
But DC isn't exactly the safehaven they hoped for, having been divided into three major factions: the Mall—which is controlled by a man named Knox and his lieutenants—Columbia Heights to the north, and Anacostia to the south.
On arrival, Books immediately recognizes that the people of the Mall are in a wartime posture. Uncomfortable with the idea of being pulled into someone else's war, he advises that the entire company should depart. Bug, upon realizing that the Mall is wonderfully organized with hydro-electric power, security, and a functioning hospital, refuses that advice, stating that it is more than fair that they should help their new benefactors defend their adopted territory.
Can their bond endure their conflicting points of view or will they be drawn against each other, and into a war that will consume everyone...leaving DC in Ashes?

Not what I expected, but what I needed
I’ll admit it took my a while to get into this story. I guess I was just attached to the characters from the previous books.
But once this story got moving, It REALLY got moving.
There was a pleasant surprise about halfway through (you’ll know when you get there)
All in all, a great book and an as always an excellent performance by RC Bray.

Its own book.
No spoilers. This book had to grow on me. Just like Commune One. Yes, new characters, all new books are just that, new. I admit, I felt no kismet with any of the characters for quite a while. I had to unlock my brain and let this become its own individual book, and not part of a series. (That was tough)
Due to my love of Lord Bray, Mr. Ford, and Mr. Gayou, I persevered. Holy Crap, I’m glad I did.
I can’t wait to see which rabbit hole this goes down.
Great job fellas!

A great expanse on the commune universe
Really digging this book. It’s similar to commune 2 where Gibbs, Wang and the the rest of the bus crew were introduced. It’s a whole new cast of characters. Really loving it so far. Josh writes great books and Devon C Ford is a fantastic addition since I love his after it happened series. Plus you got the god narrator RC Bray to listen to. Love it

Not what I was expecting.
Putting together one of my favourite writers, and my favourite series with one of the best narrators in the business, should have been a home run.
Without spoiling the story, I was expecting another chapter in the life of the established characters from the previous books. Maybe “Gibbs” search for pinch. Or even Kuaté and life after exile from Jackson.
This book is of the same universe as the commune series, however it stars a new cast of characters in a different location.
This story as a stand alone is pretty good however none of the characters where close to being as likeable as the previous cast. (in my opinion) this would benefit not using the commune title as it has nothing to do with the Jackson commune of the previous books. It’s probably just my expectations letting me down as the previous books set the bar so high, but I didn’t really care about the characters in this book.
In summary, you can do a lot worse in the post apocalyptic genre. But you could do a little bit better.

Great once you get over it being a different story
I like many listeners expected more story in the core Commune universe and was disappointed that it actually included exactly zero characters we knew. I reset my expectations and restarted the book with a Tabula Rasa approach and I absolutely loved it.
People giving low scores simply because it’s a different story setting and characters aren’t giving it the chance it deserves. Both authors gave us precisely the quality I’ve come to trust which has me buying any of their books regardless of topic.
Ignore any negative reviews of people simply disappointed in it not being what they expected. They are salty and short sighted.

Commune As Just Another Survival Story
When I see a COMMUNE book coming up. I think of the story of the Jackson Commune. This book wasn't it. It was "A Commune Story", but not the Commune story itself".
I accepted it and tried to find something to like in the new characters. However, I kept feeling like this book was rehashing other survivor story themes and plots I'd heard before. It did not engage me as much as the previous titles. Although in the end, I grew somewhat attached to some characters, I found myself uninterested enough to shelf the book for a little while but kept going out of respect for previous iterations of the series.

well.
I was really looking forward to the continuation of this series. I am over half way, and the main characters from the first 4 books have yet to be mentioned. At this point, it feels like a stand alone book... Not the book 5 I was looking forward to. Also, in the beginning of book 2, it was explained that book would have a lot of profanity because it was mainly from the view point of a marine. I liked that. However, as the series continued, the profanity has really increased. I would hesitate to listen again to count, but it seems has there is a "God damn" every 2 minutes. Really unnecessary. It made sense from the marines view point, but now it's just like a drinking game cliche.
RC Bray is awesome.
