Publisher's Summary

The author of the acclaimed novel Scarborough weaves an unforgettable and timely dystopian tale about a near future where a queer Black performer and his allies join forces to rise up when an oppressive regime gathers those deemed “Other” into concentration camps.

Set in a terrifyingly familiar near future, with massive floods leading to rampant homelessness and devastation, a government-sanctioned regime called The Boots seizes the opportunity to round up communities of color, the disabled, and the LGBTQ+ into labor camps.

In the shadows, a new hero emerges. After he loses his livelihood as a drag queen and the love of his life, Kay joins the resistance alongside Bahadur, a transmasculine refugee, and Firuzeh, a headstrong social worker. Guiding them in the use of weapons and close-quarters combat is Beck, a rogue army officer, who helps them plan an uprising at a major televised international event.

With her signature “raw yet beautiful, disturbing yet hopeful” (Booklist) prose, Catherine Hernandez creates a vision of the future that is all the more frightening because it is very possible. A cautionary tale filled with fierce and vibrant characters, Crosshairs explores the universal desire to thrive, love, and be loved for being your true self.

Felt all the feelings

This book was amazing. It wasn't always an easy listen and I found myself arguing with the author in my head, but the characters and plot were incredibly compelling.
I normally think authors shouldn't narrate their own stories, but this one is an exception. Very talented narrator as well as author.
Definitely recommend this powerful story to everyone.

A must read/listen

Anyone saying this book is terrible is likely suffering from White Fragility.
This is a must read/listen for White people, like me, especially during times like this when ‘freedom convoys’ are allowed to carry on for weeks without any repercussions.
This book was beautifully narrated by the author and the characters were well created.
I really hope we never have to deal with events similar to what is in this book, but this has helped me learn how to become a better ally regardless.

Must read!

Narrator was fantastic. Really put emotion into every sentence. Very relevant themes of racism and discrimination

A cautionary tale of alt right takeover

Crosshairs is a cautionary tale of alt right takeover in a not too distant future dystopian Canada. The Others, comprised of non-white and 2SLGBTQI individuals, are being eliminated from society. Their rights and freedoms are stolen, along with their legal documents and access to finances. Those who are unable to run and hide are subjected to forced labour camps for the benefit of the elite; comprised of white, cis, straight individuals. Those who have fought tooth and nail for their right to exist in society will not go peaceably into the night. Knocked down and stripped of their human dignity by The Boots, they rise to resist their oppressors, with the support of a few allies.

Difficult to get into

I had to repeat Chapter 1 a few times before I figured out what was going on!!! Overall it was a good story powerfully stated. I found the ending to be implausible.
this is one instance where the author reading the story was a great idea!!

Starts off interesting

An interesting story that starts strong but slowly falls apart and lost its impact as the story becomes more akin to a YA distopian novel instead of a message about lgbtq+ oppression

Brilliantly thought provoking.

Absolutely captivated from the very beginning. I laughed, cried, and stood with them on their journey.

Too hard to listen to.

This story only brings up anger and resentment. Also found the story timeline hard to follow. While the imagery and prose is poetic at times and the performance is very good, the story is hard to listen to and somewhat I plausible. Not a pleasant listen for me.
