Story
The day Anna McDonald's quiet, respectable life explodes starts off like all the days before: Packing up the kids for school, making breakfast, listening to yet another true crime podcast. Then her husband comes downstairs with an announcement, and Anna is suddenly, shockingly alone. Reeling, desperate for distraction, Anna returns to the podcast. Other people's problems are much better than one's own - a sunken yacht, a murdered family, a hint of international conspiracy. But this case actually is Anna's problem. She knows one of the victims from an earlier life.

Richard Nixon opens with young navy lieutenant "Nick" Nixon returning from the Pacific and setting his cap at Congress, an idealistic dreamer seeking to build a better world. Yet amid the turns of that now legendary 1946 campaign, Nixon's finer attributes quickly gave way to unapologetic ruthlessness. It is a stunning overture to John A. Farrell's magisterial portrait of a man who embodied postwar American cynicism.

Gates of Fire puts you at the side of valiant Spartan warriors in 480 BC for the bloody, climactic battle at Thermopylae. There, a few hundred of Sparta’s finest sacrificed their lives to hold back the invading Persian millions. The time they bought enabled the Greeks to rally - saving, according to ancient historian Herodotus, “Western democracy and freedom from perishing in the cradle.” How did the Spartans accomplish this superhuman feat? This is what the King of Persia hopes to learn from the sole Spartan survivor.

Story
Civilization was born 8,000 years ago, between the floodplains of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, when migrants from the surrounding mountains and deserts began to create increasingly sophisticated urban societies. In the cities that they built, half of human history took place. In Babylon, Paul Kriwaczek tells the story of Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements seven thousand years ago to the eclipse of Babylon in the sixth century BCE. Bringing the people of this land to life in vibrant detail, the author chronicles the rise and fall of power during this period.

Publisher's Summary
Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever.
Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

Great Version of an Intriguing Novel
I confess that I don't remember much of the 1990 Kevin Costner film.. other than some spectacular Cinematography. It turns out the story by Michael Blake is well-written, well-paced, and thought-provoking. The theme of looking at the challenges faced by Native Americans as Europeans spread West - from the POV of an isolated Civil War soldier adopted into a Comanche tribe - is handled sensitively but realistically.
Less fortunately, the story is a little bit formulaic (including an obligatory pretty love-interest and clichéd "bad guys"), but it doesn't feel particularly contrived. In addition, the "flashback" technique to build characters is slightly overdone (but it didn't detract from the narrative too badly - the story still flows nicely).
The quality performance from George Guidall is a definite selling point for this recording, too: Guidall constantly sounds like he needs to clear saliva from the corners of his mouth, but delivers exemplary diction, cadence, and voice-acting.. and a genuinely impressive explanatory tone that fits the text *perfectly*. This project was cast beautifully.
Altogether, I rate this iteration of 'Dances With Wolves' 9.5 out of 10 stars. I was able to get this book on sale - and it was easily worth the $3.10 CDN I paid for it. It would actually merit a Credit.
