Bree Taggart is a character you need to know
I first listened to a Melinda Leigh book when I saw a free book in my membership, and now, can't get enough! The Bree Taggart Series is so good and the characters are believable and relatable.
Melinda Leigh is a wonderful author, who writes in such detail, you don't have to strain your imagination to picture the scene. I highly recommend her books.

Enjoying...but
I am really enjoying this series, but it seems that with each new book there is an increase in the amount of swearing, I don't mind a little swearing, but the use of the harshest swear words is jolting to me. Lazy writing, I think.

Should have read the book
The books are okay, but the melodramatic female narrative dims a decent book-if I was not stuck in stop and go traffic, I would have given up. A narrator can enhance a good book or weaken it.

Love Melinda Leigh books!
This was a great story! It's about a double murder Bree is trying to solve. About her niece and nephew, the children of her murdered sister, she's doing her best to raise and about her growing love for Matt. I loved everything about this story. Bree and Matt are such a great couple AND the real killer at the end is very surprising.
Very little affection shown and the F-bomb was used 39 times.
As for the narration: Christina Traister is a good narrator. She could make her males sound less like they are all whispering but at least they sound like men.

Weakest in the series so far
I found it hard to keep my focus with this book, unlike the others in the series. I hope this isn’t a sign of writer fatigue with the storyline. I will try the next in the series hoping this one was just a fluke.

Both interesting and frustrating at same time
I love the progression of personal and family life. Found myself frustrated by Sheriff Taggert's reaction to some situations that could have been resolved more easily with quicker simple actions. But that would have resolved some minor villains in press and maybe other agencies.
Part of those frustrations might be a tendency of mine as I get deeper into longer book series.

A Little Disappointed
I enjoy the stories but this one really bothered me - if Bree is so good at being Sheriff then she should be good at getting out in front of her public problems. I think getting a lawyer and getting ahead of the reputation killer would have been the smart thing to do but she hems and haws about it instead of acting. It was frustrating to me that she didn't take action more quickly. I was finding myself fast forwarding sometimes. Not sure if I want to stick with the series or not at this point.

Paid by the word?
This could easily have been half as long and been a good read. The story is good, narration less than enjoyable and probably added to my feeling of crawling through concrete to find out who done it. Actually, had I been reading I would have skimmed as half the verbiage was totally superfluous- and boring!

Tense but leaves you feeling good by the end
I really like this series and this book was one of the best so far. Coincidentally, I live in the area this series is based in so it’s been fun to try and guess if places are based on real ones or not. I read a lot at Lake George and just listened to this whole audiobook while staring out at the north end of the lake, so it was really easy for me to imagine the boat scene!

Good story, distracting performance
I was finally able to put my finger on what made the narrator so difficult to listen to: it’s like driving with someone who has 1 foot on the brake, and 1 foot on the gas. Here is how it goes: Matt had. One thought, on his mind. Bree! Could tell, what, he was thinking. ~~ and now imagine what it is like to listen to a whole book that way. It’s really distracting and kind of annoying.
As another reviewer said, whoever does the voice of Matt makes him sound like he is so depressed that it’s a wonder he is able to get out of bed in the morning.
The story is good and well put together, the characters are great and engaging, and the series has me hooked. However, I have one more note for the author. In the beginning of this book, two characters were described as being elderly, surprisingly spry for their age, coping as well as they could for their age, and so on. The characters were 70. I would ask the author to take another look at what 70 looks like today, and stop making the assumptions that anyone that age is barely able to carry on their life. Enough ageism, please.
