Among the towering red cliffs of Petra, like some monstrous swollen Buddha, sits the corpse of Mrs.Boynton. A tiny puncture mark on her wrist is the only sign of the fatal injection that killed her. With only 24 hours available to solve the mystery, Hercule Poirot recalled a chance remark he'd overheard back in Jerusalem: "You see, don't you, that she's got to be killed?" The house guests at Styles seemed perfectly harmless to Captain Hastings: There was his own daughter Judith, an inoffensive ornithologist called Norton, dashing Mr. Allerton, brittle Miss Cole, Doctor Franklin and his fragile wife Barbara, Nurse Craven, Colonel Luttrell and his charming wife Daisy, and the charismatic Boyd-Carrington. So Hastings was shocked when Poirot declared that one of them was a five-times murderer. True, the detective was ageing, but had his deductive instincts finally deserted him?

Infuriatingly, just as he was about to show her a snapshot of this acquaintance, the Major was suddenly interrupted. A diversion that was to prove fatal.

In utter disbelief, Miss Marple read the letter addressed to her from the recently deceased Mr. Rafiel...an acquaintance she had met briefly on her travels. He had left instructions for her to investigate a crime after his death. The only problem was, he had failed to tell her who was involved or where and when the crime had been committed. It was most intriguing. Soon she is faced with a new crime...the ultimate crime...murder. It seems someone is adamant that past evils remained buried....

From seat number nine, Hercule Poirot is almost ideally placed to observe his fellow air travelers on this short flight from Paris to London. Over to his right sits a pretty young woman, clearly infatuated with the man opposite. Ahead, in seat number 13, is the Countess of Horbury, horribly addicted to cocaine and not doing too good a job of concealing it. Across the gangway in seat number eight, a writer of detective fiction is being troubled by an aggressive wasp. Yes, Poirot is almost ideally placed to take it all in.

Captain Arthur Hastings, invalided in the Great War, is recuperating as a guest of John Cavendish at Styles Court, the "country-place" of John's autocratic old aunt, Emily Inglethorpe - she of a sizeable fortune, and so recently remarried to a man 20 years her junior. When Emily's sudden heart attack is found to be attributable to strychnine, Hastings recruits an old friend, now retired, to aid in the local investigation. With impeccable timing, Hercule Poirot, the famous Belgian detective, makes his dramatic entrance into the pages of crime literature.

On holiday on the Cornish Riviera, Hercule Poirot is alarmed to hear pretty Nick Buckley describe her recent "accidental brushes with death". First, on a treacherous Cornish hillside, the brakes on her car failed. Then, on a coastal path, a falling boulder missed her by inches. Later, an oil painting fell and almost crushed her in bed. So when Poirot finds a bullet hole in Nick's sun hat, he decides that this girl needs his help. Can he find the would-be killer before he hits his target?

A Not-Commonly-Read, Great Novel, along with a Beloved Classic
- By pigletbunny on 2020-08-11
Written by: Agatha Christie
Publisher's Summary
Soon to be a major motion picture sequel to Murder on the Orient Express with a screenplay by Michael Green, directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh alongside Gal Gadot - coming February 11, 2022!
Beloved detective Hercule Poirot embarks on a journey to Egypt in one of Agatha Christie’s most famous mysteries.
The tranquility of a luxury cruise along the Nile was shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway had been shot through the head. She was young, stylish, and beautiful. A girl who had everything...until she lost her life.
Hercule Poirot recalled an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: “I’d like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger.” Yet under the searing heat of the Egyptian sun, nothing is ever quite what it seems.
A sweeping mystery of love, jealousy, and betrayal, Death on the Nile is one of Christie’s most legendary and timeless works.
“Death on the Nile is perfect.” (The Guardian)
“One of her best.... First rate entertainment.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Bow down to Kenneth Branagh
Death on the Nile was an absolute delight to hear over audio. Kenneth Branagh uses an assortment of different voices and accents to make the massive amount of characters come to life and feel individual. His voice is even able to animate the social class of certain characters and the moments of pause and dialogue were to perfection. Christie is known for her large use of dialogue and Branagh does her justice. You won't be disappointed with this audiobook, characters and plot that is Death on the Nile

Bravo Mr. Branagh!!!!!
I loved every second of this audiobook experience. All I can say is, if you love Poirot, and you don’t yet own a version of this book, stop shopping right now and buy this audiobook. If you already have the David Suchet version (which is also very good btw), but you love Death on the Nile, do yourself a favor and buy this audiobook. This is my favorite Agatha Christie book, and I already own the fore mentioned version, but ever since I heard Kenneth Branagh read Murder on the Orient Express, I’ve been counting the days for my monthly credits. Now I’m hoping that he reads Evil Under the Sun next.

Surprisingly, I prefer the movie version of this story ( 1978 ). Perhaps because of the lovely scenery and set design. This is a typical Hercule Poirot mystery, everyone is a suspect. Kenneth Branagh does a great job narrating.

Guessed the Who, Missed the How
And even then, I was only half-right about the Who. As usual, Christie gives us everything we need for a solution. Everything except an adequate supply of the little grey cells (an expression which, oddly enough, Poirot doesn’t use in this story).
And Kenneth Branagh gives us a superb performance, adding touches that aren’t in the script—nervous laughter, slight, incredulous guffaws—that help an author who was always a better storyteller than a writer. Though some reviewers had a hard time keeping track of characters, I thought Branagh did an especially fine job at that.
