Story
The Ape That Understood the Universe is the story of the strangest animal in the world: the human animal. It opens with a question: How would an alien scientist view our species? What would it make of our sex differences, our sexual behavior, our child-rearing patterns, our moral codes, our religions, our languages, and science? The book tackles these issues by drawing on ideas from two major schools of thought: evolutionary psychology and cultural evolutionary theory.

Or, you can just listen to Super Thinking, a fun, illustrated guide to every mental model you could possibly need.

Challenging leading scientific theories that claim that our senses report back objective reality, cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman argues that while we should take our perceptions seriously, we should not take them literally. How can it be possible that the world we see is not objective reality? And how can our senses be useful if they are not communicating the truth? Hoffman grapples with these questions and more over the course of this eye-opening work.

It is arguably the single most important skill for surviving the twenty-first century. But what does it really mean? One decade ago, Alain de Botton founded The School of Life, an institute dedicated to understanding and improving our emotional intelligence. Now he presents the gathered wisdom of those ten years in a wide-ranging and innovative compendium of emotional intelligence that forms an introduction to The School of Life.

Publisher's Summary
The Instant Cult Classic from the Creator of The Book of Self Mastery
A bold and fascinating dive into the nuts and bolts of psychological evolution, Designing the Mind: The Principles of Psychitecture is part philosophical manifesto, part practical self-development guide, all based on the teachings of legendary thinkers like Marcus Aurelius, Lao Tzu, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Abraham Maslow. The ideas and techniques it offers are all integrated into a vital theory for helping individuals scale the heights of self-mastery and lead great lives.
This visionary guide argues that the mind can be compared to software, made up of many interwoven algorithms which were originally programmed by natural selection. Though most never learn to alter their default programming, it is possible to rewire cognitive biases, change ingrained habits, and transform emotional reactions. The process of psychitecture enables you to unplug from your own mind, identify its underlying patterns, and become the architect of your own enlightenment.
Simultaneously ancient and futuristic, Designing the Mind defies categorization, masterfully linking mindfulness to transhumanism, evolutionary psychology to Stoicism, and neuroscience to Buddhism. It frames the ideas of ancient sages as open-source code for the mind, putting forth a new, rational vision of spiritual enlightenment centered around gradual self-optimization.
What the critics say
"A fascinating framework." (Scott Barry Kaufman, PhD, author of Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization)
"It has already changed my life, and I know it will change others as well." (Aaron T. Perkins, executive leadership coach)
"Super intriguing." (Jason Silva, global keynote speaker and Emmy-nominated host of Brain Games)

It gets better as it develops.
First, playing it at 1.5x was useful. When I wanted to take notes, I paused, then wrote. The energy of the faster words made them digestible. I would guess that Chapters 1-4 would have been more enlightening for me than they were if I had employed this tool. Second, Chapters 5–10 were beneficial to me & I thank the author for his work.

Stopped 3 minutes in - I can not tolerate the narration.
I wanted to enjoy this book, but the narration is so disjointed and disharmonious. I’ll give it another shot if they choose a different narrator.

Material is good. Delivery is a little flat.
None of the ideas in this book are entirely new. They are, however, important. I think of this as a collection of stoic philosophies and life hacks to improving your emotional regulation. So yeah, it’s a good read.

This is a Great Book!
¡Wow! I can't say how much I love this book and how well it brought together so many aspects that I am already pursuing on my own but not in a comprehensive form such as this. I plan on using this book to help me design my mind and I'm grateful to the author a narrator for presenting this to the world!

Definitely enjoyed this book
It definitely reinforced some of my beliefs I had prior to this audiobook. It also introduced beliefs and concepts I had not thought to entertain. I had thought of the mind as a computer but not so much in the way of being self programmed. I was thought of myself as a person that is learning from others and not necessarily learning from myself. I will definitely revisit this book again. Thank you and only con for me was the orator was a little monotone.

Trash...One of the worst books I have every bought
1. The brain is not a computer.
2. The narrator sounds like Birdperson from Rick & Morty.
3. This is a very poor attempt to gather and present the philosophies through computer terminology... the big issue here is that human beings are not computers, or machines.
4. This is one of the absolute worst books I have ever purchased on Audible in both content and delivery. I feel ashamed that I have sat and listened to this garbage. Nearly every self-help book at this book is a regurgitation of either Stoicism, Nietzsche, or Buddha. Folks, there is no new philosophy, there are no new problems, most of your issues can be solved through the pursuit of philosophy in both western and eastern context.
